Taste ‘n Tear 4H

Next meeting of the Taste ‘n Tear 4H Club will be Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. a the home of Helen Appel. Re-enrollment forms will be filled out and officers will be elected. New members welcome.

FCCLA

Colfax FCCLA is now collecting pull tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. Any pure aluminum pull tab will do.

The pull tabs will be sold to recycling and the money will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane, which houses families who have critically ill children. Tabs can be donated at the Colfax High School office or the Whitman County Library.

Athenaeum Club

Athenaeum Club met for their Homecoming Tea Oct. 2. The Year Book Committee as “Book Worms” introduced the program for the coming year as book reviews on books donated to the library in memory of a member.

The first meeting of the year was at the home of Mae Schultz with 17 members present. Committee reports were presented and members were reminded that dues are due. The first book review of the year was presented by Joan Hubbard on the novel/fact based book “Silver Threads” telling about the union based struggles in the Silver Valley of Idaho during 1891-92. This book was dedicated to the late Evelyn Hickman.

The next meeting is Nov. 6 at the Peace Lutheran Church with Cindy Jones and Sherry Cox as co-hostesses.

Births

McHargue son born

A boy, Kasey Charles, was born Oct. 12, 2009, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Shannon and Michael McHargue. Maternal grandmother is Michele Dvorak, Farmington. Paternal grandparents are Ron and Judy McHargue. The baby joins two brothers, Michael and Alexander.

Parentage judgment

An order granting a summary judgment Oct. 15 in superior court was entered in favor of petitioner, Steven D. Crandall of Colfax. The court ruled he is the father of Ayden James Kimberling. A birth announcement in the July 2 Gazette, provided by the mother, Brandi Kimberling, named a different father for the boy who was born June 23.

The court found the baby was born within 300 days of when the marriage was terminated, Dec. 12, 2008, when the parties ceased living together. The parentage petition was included in marriage dissolution proceedings which are still pending. The baby’s paternal grandparents are James R. Crandall, Milwaukee, Wis .; and Nancy Crandall, Auburn.

On Campus

ART

UI Prichard Gallery on Main Street in Moscow will feature “Up On the Wall, 6 Painters from the West” Oct. 16 to Dec. 5. Work from painters in four states will feature diverse approaches to technique and media.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Mingle‚” two distinct bodies of work, portraits and still lifes, by painter Craig Cully, assistant professor at New Mexico State University, will be display Oct. 7 - 30 at WSU’s Gallery II in the Fine Arts Center. The exhibition will consist of small to medium-sized images painted with oil pigment on wood panels.

Gallery II is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 -5 with a noon break.

MUSIC

WSU Jazz Festival Nov. 4 with noon concert featuring pianist Brent Edstrom performing with the award-winning WSU Jazz Big Band directed by Greg Yasinitsky. Edstrom is an associate professor of music at Whitworth College in Spokane where he teaches jazz piano and coordinates the music theory and composition program.

The faculty group Jazz Northwest will also perform at the concert in Bryan Hall.

The festival will feature school groups from throughout the Northwest performing in Kimbrough Concert Hall 8-11:40 a.m. and from 2:20-3:40 p.m. Edstrom will present a clinic at 1 p.m. in Bryan Hall Theatre

The festival is supported by the WSU School of Music, the Jazz Society at WSU and a Student Programming Grant from Campus Involvement.

DRAMA

Dracula, WSU’s Jones Theater in Daggy Hall, Oct. 22-24 and 29-31 at 7:30 p.m. Students Jason Keene of Camas and Syleanna Campbell of Auburn play the lead roles of Count Dracula and Mina. Tickets: $15 general admission, $10 for age 65 and over and for WSU students, $5 for 17 and under. Daggy Hall box office will open 2-5:20 p.m., Tuesday-Friday, during weeks of performance and an hour before curtain time.

Children and their families are invited to a Pumpkin Decorating Party on Weds, Oct. 28 from 3:30-4:30 in the Colfax Library. Snacks, pumpkins and supplies will be provided although participants are welcome to bring their own as well.

A valuable new Play and Learn program begins Friday, Oct. 23 from 10-11:30 a.m. Geared toward infants, toddlers, young children and their parents, grandparents and care-givers, this program is being held each week on the second floor of the US Bank building. Participants can stay the entire time or drop in and out as their schedule allows.

Give your child a head start by attending Children’s Storytime programs each Thursday with Baby Time for ages 0-2 years from 10:10-10:30, Toddler Time for ages 2-3 from 10:30-11:00 and Preschool Time for ages 4 and up from 11-11:30.

More than 30 contractors attended Thursday’s pre-bid walk through for the ADA renovation project at the Colfax Library. Bids are due October 29 when they will be opened publicly at 4 p.m.

In preparation for the project, library staffers are compressing all books and materials into shelving at the north end of the building. The majority of the project will take place in the center and southern most sections as well as the basement and mezzanine. Staff will assist patrons in locating materials during the transition and nearly 40,000 items can still be requested from branch locations as well.
