Serving Whitman County since 1877

Bulldog netter power to top district ticket

Colfax netters downed Northwest Christian with a three-game power win Saturday at Colbert to take the top Bi-County ticket into the district rounds which start today at St. George’s. The district show lines up the five qualifiers from the Bi-County against three qualifiers from Panorama.

Colfax, as the number one, will go up against Lind/Ritzville at 5 p.m. today, Thursday, in the first round. The Broncos are the number-five entrant from the Bi-County.

A win tonight would advance the Bulldogs to a semi-final round back at St. George’s at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Saturday, Colfax and NWC, the top two teams in the league, matched up in a seeding game. Both teams already had guarantee tickets to this week’s district show at St. George’s.

Colfax prevailed 25-11 25-11 and 26-24.

“Most of it was our strong serving,” Coach Sue Doering said.

Colfax rolled up a 69-76 serving mark against the Crusaders. They missed just three times in the first game, once in the second game and three in the last game.

Senior Kayla Johnson booked 23 kills, an extra-high mark considering the match lasted for just three games.

Brooke Webber hit 14-14 serving with two aces, and Rachel Johnson, who had a decisive serving run in the second game, booked a 19-20 with three aces.

Megan Pearson was 12-12 with a pair of aces.

“Rachel, Brooke and Megan were so strong in serving it stopped their offense. Of course, they also had Kayla in front of them to put down the points,” Doering said.

Top three teams out of the final rounds at St. George’s will advance to the state championships next week at Yakima’s SunDome.
