Firing two handguns, U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan kills 11 people and wounds 31 others in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood base in Texas, the largest military installation in the world and a prime point of deployment for U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hasan was a military psychiatrist who had treated soldiers returning from combat.

The United States slapped anti-dumping duties ranging up to 99 percent on Chinese-made oil well pipes in the biggest U.S. trade action against China.
