Colton will host Columbia Lions in playoff start

Columbia of Hunters, number-three team in a tough NE league, will visit Colton in the first round of the eight-man playoffs Friday. The Lions are seeded behind Almira-Coulee-Hartline and Cusick, two area power clubs also on the grid to start of the playoffs.

Two years ago in their last state bid, the Wildcats defeated Columbia before battling Odessa and losing a classic quarter-final round at West Valley game. Coach Clark Vining said the Lions, led by running backs Eli Bear and Paul Larrew, will try to play a ground possession game.

“They like to run an offense which averages four yards a play all night,” Vining comments.

The Wildcats, who dropped to the SE number-two slot after losing to Tri-Cities Prep two weeks ago, will host Columbia after pegging a 28-8 non-league win over the GP Vikings last Friday at Palouse.

Sam Robertson posted a 17-282 night with three of the four Wildcat TDs.

The Wildcats passed just 13 times in the game with Josh Straughan hitting Chase Druffel for the other Colton TD.

Winner of the Colton-Columbia game Friday will face the winner of the Cusick-Odessa game in the quarter-final round.

The TCP Jaguars and Touchet will represent the SE as the number-one and number-three teams on the playoff grid.

Eagles finish with big win over SC Knight

St. John/Endicott finished out the year on a 58-14 win over Sunnyside Christian in the last round of the SE eights on their home turf. The Eagles had a 38-14 lead at the half over the Knights, and Coach Bob Clements was able to play the bench.

Dylan Schmick, a senior who missed the last four games after being hurt against GP, had four receptions for 76 yards, including a 49-yard shot for the first Eagle score.

Qb Kyle Raynor had an 11-21-198 passing night, including four other TD passes.

Evan Raynor had two catches for 55 yards.

Cole McCanna, who scored twice, finished with 99 yards rushing. Ben Harrison had 91 yards, and Trevor Johnson booked 73, including one 28-yard TD run.

Tigercats wrap injury-ladened grid season

LaCrosse/Washtucna/ Kahlotus wrapped up the season with a 12-62 loss at Lyle Friday. The Tigercats, who essentially had all of their running backs on the injury list, threw on every down with sophomore QB Jake Aune doing what he could to find a receiver.

Aune had the same assignment in the previous week’s game.

Coach Jeff Nelson noted this year was the worst he’s ever had for injuries with four of the top LWK kill players knocked out of the lineup.

LWK finished with a 4-5 record with the five defeats going into the books on the last five games.

The positive to take out of the season was some of the experience picked up by the younger players when they were called to weather the storm over those last five games, Coach Nelson said.
