Palouse Empire Fair 2009 Beef Carcass award winners

Winners in the 2009 Palouse Empire Fair Beef Carcass of Merit and Premier Steer Contests were announced October 21, 2009, at the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds.

First Place in the McIntosh-Reeves Carcass of Merit Contest was AnnaLee Sears of Pullman.

AnnaLee’s name was engraved on the Joe Palumbo Memorial Traveling Trophy which has the names of past winners.

Second Place in the Beef Carcass of Merit Contest went to Nick Niehenke of Colton and third to Cody Claussen of Colfax.

Cash awards sponsored by McIntosh Angus and Bar R Cattle Company were presented to the top three places in the Carcass of Merit Contest.

Nineteen additional steers exhibited by Kristie McGourin, Luke Moore, Katie Dill, Matt Stubbs, Katie McGourin, Tyler Kincaid, Lane Moore, Hannah Herrington, Caleb Hannas, Lucy Lautenschlager, Korbyn Dub, Kaysha Lyman, Royce Grassl, Cody Lacy, Carolena Sears, Arlie Reeves, Caleb Berquist, J.B. Lange and Taylor Weekes qualified for the Carcass of Merit distinction.

Champion in the Premier Steer Contest was Caleb Berquist of LaCrosse.

He received the Mark Oldenburg Memorial Traveling Trophy for his achievement.

Receiving Reserve Champion was J.B. Lange of Garfield and placing third was Chris Wargo of LaCrosse.

Pacific Northwest Farmers Cooperative and Colfax Grange Supply provided cash awards to the top three placings in the Premier Steer Contest.

Twenty-one additional steers qualified for the Premier Steer distinction.

They were exhibited by Korbyn Dub, AnnaLee Sears, Taylor Weekes, Kristie McGourin, Kaysha Lyman, Katie McGourin, Carolena Sears, Caleb Hannas, Arlie Reeves, Lane Moore, Katie Dill, Arlie Reeves (second steer), Megan Grassl, Courtney Kimberling, Luke Moore, Royce Grassl, Matt Stubbs, Hannah Herrington, Nick Niehenke, Tyler Kincaid and Lucy Lautenschlager.

In addition to evaluating desirable carcass characteristics, the premier steer contest also looks at average daily gain throughout the feeding period.

On behalf of the Oregon-Washington- North Idaho Hereford Breeders, Elaine Garcia presented Craig Nelson and Hayley Dorman with Certificates of Distinction for exhibiting the Champion Hereford Heifers at Palouse Empire Fair.
