Bulldogs fight off charge to end early Gorilla string

Valley Christian's Tyler Tipke is surrounded by Bulldogs Will Hatley, Derek Hamilton and Dustin Huber in the Friday.

Colfax boys Tuesday went into high gear early and fought off a Davenport charge to peg a 62-57 win on the home court. The Colfax win stopped the Gorillas’ win streak at six games. Davenport arrived in Colfax Tuesday as the top-rated 2B team.

“It’s really great that we were able to fight off their charge late in the game,” Colfax Coach Reece Jenkin said. He figures the Gorilla streak stopper will do a lot to build Bulldog confidence for the league run after the Christmas break.

Sophomore JJ Robinson led Colfax with 20 points. Robinson booked 11-12 from the toss line. That included a 4-4 at the end of the game when the Gorillas were forced to foul to get possession of the ball.

Colfax had a lead of 14 points in the third quarter before the undefeated G-club started their charge.

Caleb Bravard hit two three pointers in the fourth quarter, and Tanner Gay hit a late lay-up to fend off the Gorillas.

The big home win came after the Bulldogs booked a reverse result at Ritzville Saturday night against the Broncos.

The Bulldogs stacked up a 35-17 lead at the half, but the Broncos came roaring back after the break. They erased 11 points of the Colfax lead in the third quarter and booked 29 beans in the last quarter to go past the Bulldogs and win 68-64. Bronco James Stevenson hit nine points in the final quarter charge and finished with a game high 19 points.

“We just didn’t play for 32 minutes,” Coach Jenkin commented. “We just didn’t execute at all in the second half.”

In the home opener against the Valley Christian Panthers last Friday, Coach Jenkin started his second unit because they had topped the starters in the previous day’s practice scrimmage. The fast-moving second unit stacked up most of the 27 points in the first quarter before Jenkin rolled out the starters in a platoon form.

Freshman Brandon Gfeller hit five three-point shots for the game, including three straight in the first quarter during the second unit blitz.

Gfeller finished has high point man for the night with 17. Will Hatley and Dustin Huber, both seniors, each hit 12.

The Bulldogs led 51-6 at the half and came out with a lot of perimeter shooting in the second half. They finished with 11 threebies.
