Colfax roars past Gorillas

Raven Elkins pulls down a rebound between Valley Christian's Meaghan Miller and the Bulldogs' Shaina Simonson in the Friday night game at Colfax.

After shaking off a slow start Tuesday night at home, Colfax girls rolled up 53 points in the middle quarters to trounce the Davenport girls 74-27. The win advanced the record to 4-0 for the Bulldogs who also had a delayed start before booking a win Saturday at Ritzville.

Davenport, who arrived Tuesday with a 3-3 record, posted a 6-5 lead in the first quarter, but that was blown off the court when the Bulldog found the switch.

“We’ve just been having trouble getting started in that first quarter. We’re just not converting the points,” Coach Corey Baerlocher said.

He noted Colfax booked 10 turnovers for the game, and it seemed like eight of those were in the lethargic first quart.

The Bulldogs then roared for 33-17 lead at the half and added another 16 points to the gap over the Gorillas in the third frame.

Kayla Johnson finished with 32 points with 30 of those coming in the two middle quarters.

Brittney Burke hit two three pointers in the third quarter to help sustain the drive.

Saturday night on the league opener at Ritzville, the Bulldogs again had trouble hitting their game pace. Baerlocher noted the Colfax had 18 turnovers against the Broncs but it seemed more like 30 with the slow starting game.

Colfax forced 29 turnovers out of the Broncos for a key factor in the Bi-County opener.

Friday night at Colfax, the Bulldogs rolled past the Valley Christian Panthers with Burke hitting 14 to lead an open scoring attack.

Next stop for the Bulldogs will be the SunDome shootout at Yakima Tuesday and Wednesday.
