Clyde R. (Dick) Keating
A memorial service for Clyde R. (Dick) Keating, 76, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Spokane Friends Church at 1612 W. Dalke, Spokane. Viewing will be at Heritage Funeral Home Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mr. Keating died Jan. 8, 2010 after an extended battle with cancer.
Born in Colfax, on July 15, 1933, to John and Frances Keating, he lived in the Colfax – Pullman area for most of his life.
He moved to Spokane in 2006 to be near family members. Dick worked at WSU for 32 years until retiring in 1995, but he remained a loyal Cougar fan.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Keating.
He is survived by his sisters Betty Bendixen of Spokane and Ruby Friesen of West Linn, Ore., along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles Curtis
A memorial service for Charles (Chuck) Henley Curtis, 90, native of Hay, will be Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. in the First Baptist Church at 8th Street and 8th Ave. in Lewiston. A private burial service will be at the family cemetery in Hay the following day.
Mr. Curtis died Jan. 9, 2010, in Yuma, Ariz.
Born in Hay Sept. 29, 1919, to Charles and Bessie Henley Curtis, who homesteaded in Riparia, he grew up farming with horses on the Snake River breaks. This love of horses led him to become a rodeo cowboy, ranche and horse trainer. He was captain of the Whitman County Sheriff’s Posse prior to a move to Clarkston in l968.
He was also an avid sports fan throughout his life and played high school basketball and tennis. He was a graduate of Hay High School.
He later enjoyed working with young people through coaching elementary basketball and baseball in Hay, as well as AAU teams, recreational softball and basketball in Lewiston. A long time bowler, Chuck changed his interest to golf after he retired from the Clarkston School district and with his wife of 41 years, Joan, began dividing time between Lewiston and Yuma so he could golf all year round.
Also surviving are children and grandchildren.
Chuck was a life long member of the First Baptist Church.
Hazel M. Johnson
Funeral services for Hazel M. Johnson, 87, were Friday, Jan. 8, at the Oakesdale Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Erik Buhl officiated. Burial followed at the Oakesdale Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson died of pneumonia last Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Whitman Hospital in Colfax.
Born Oct. 25, 1922, at Addy to Harry B. and Lydia Poffenroth Klaveano, she attended schools at Chewelah, Garfield, Endicott and Oakesdale where she graduated with the high school class of 1941.
After graduation she worked at the Davenport Hotel and then as a governess. She met Vern L. Johnson from Minnesota when he was stationed at Fort George Wright in Spokane. They were married at Marshall, Mich., June 29, 1944. After he was discharged from the service they made their home in Oakesdale. They farmed until Vern’s death in 1981.
Hazel was a member of the Pine Creek Homemakers Club and Oakesdale Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. The family enjoyed traveling and visiting relatives.
Surviving are a daughter, Colleen Rose, Oakesdale; two sisters, Mildred Keeney of Spokane and Kayrol Kay King of Gainesville, Texas; Richard Lohman of Oakesdale, two grandchildren and one great- granddaughter.
