Hospital highlights - Saving lives by donating blood

The response to the earthquake in Haiti has been wonderful. Residents can help save lives in Haiti by donating at many local collection points.

They can also help save lives right here in Whitman County by donating blood during our next blood drive Thursday, Feb. 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome or donors can schedule an appointment by calling the hospital extension 401.

The need is especially acute in winter months because fewer people donate and more accidents occur on the roadways.

Donor qualifications:

* Be at least 16 years old (16 & 17 year olds need a permission and consent form signed by a parent or guardian).

* Weigh at least 110 pounds.

* Be in general good health including free of cold or flu symptoms.

* Wait 72 hours after any dental procedures, including basic cleaning.

* Not have donated blood anywhere in the last eight weeks.

* Have waited six weeks following pregnancy.

* Have waited one year from the date of any body tattoos or piercings.

Tips for a positive blood donation experience:

* Add iron rich foods to your daily diet.

* Drink plenty of fluids in the hours prior to donating.

* Eat a nutritious meal 2 -4 hours prior.

* Bring picture ID

* Wear clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow.

* Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day after donating.

* Be sure to re-hydrate by drinking plenty of water and/or juice after donating. .
