Bulldog bombs, defense nail down number-two finish

Caleb Bravard clears another power rebound while Will Hatley clears out a Reardan player in the Bulldogs second-half runaway Friday at Colfax. Bravard led Colfax boards with 14.

After knocking a hole in the NWC win string last week, Colfax boys came up with another defensive cruncher Friday night to defeat Reardan 58-30. The Colfax win and an NWC win over Lind/Ritzville in the last round elevated the Bulldogs to a second-place finish in the league.

Colfax finished the league run at 9-3. Northwest Christian finished on top at 11-1.

Colfax will join in the two-day league fray tonight at Reardan to seed four teams into the District 7 playoff. The Bulldogs will play in Reardan’s Smith gym at 6:30 against winner of the Liberty-Lind /Ritzville qualifier.

Tonight’s winners will play for the top district slot Friday. All four qualifiers will advance to district.

Last Friday at Colfax, the Bulldogs cranked out a 37-21 lead at the break and then came out with another super third quarter. They scored 19 points and held Reardan to four.

Leading 36-25 with 2:07 left, the Bulldogs capped it off with Justin Berarducci and Tanner Gay dropping three-pointers and Berarducci coming right back with a two-pointer.

Reardan sophomore guard Johnny Keiffer hit a threebie from the corner to break the ice for Reardan with 4:40 left. They added just two more points.

Colfax senior Tanner Gay finished out his home court career with 24 points. Gay launched five three-pointers to rattle the Reardan defenders.

Reardan sustained a big setback in the first half when junior guard Chace Bell crashed to the floor and put out his shoulder. Bell, the BiC league’s fastest man who plays point guard for the chiefs, sat out the balance of the game.

Caleb Bravard was credited with pulling down 14 rebounds. Dustin Huber, also a power player on the inside for Colfax, joined in despite having a bad knee. Colfax coaches were counting on a six-day break in the action to allow Huber recovery time.

Reardan’s Trevor Peone, who clipped Colfax for 21 points when Reardan dropped Colfax 54-46 in the first round, finished Friday with just 7. Grant Schultz topped the guests with 9.
