Eagle forward Trisha Luft wraps her arms around a rebound as Spartans Samantha Wilson and Briann Maley apply defensive pressure.
Rosalia girls threw a wrench at the season’s SJE-Colton girls league saga when they upset the Eagles 48-43 Friday night on the Spartan court. Samantha Wilson knocked down a trey from the right sideline with 34 seconds left and her Spartan teammates canned a set of free throws in the waning ticks.
Rosalia jumped out to an early lead, but the Eagles came back in the second quarter. The Spartans countered with a fiery 15-7 fourth quarter in which they turned up the offense and clamped down on the powerhouse Eagles.
Coach Dave St. John credited his back court defense for shutting down Eagle senior guard Kelsey Simon.
Wilson finished the game with 10 points. Briann Maley knocked down a game high 21. Kelli Van Lith had 15 points to top the birds.
Colton, which hammered LaCrosse /Washtucna in the last league round Friday, finished on top of the league race, and SJE gets the number-two slot. Both will sit out the start of the 10-day SE playoff saga which started with teams in the bottom slots matching up Wednesday night.
Tri-Cities Prep at 6-4 and Touchet at 4-6 will join the 1B mix.
Winners of the Wednesday rounds will go up against Colton and SJE Friday and the show will move to Endicott Monday with two rounds of losers games.
Other action Friday saw Tekoa/Oakesdale defeat Garfield/Palouse in a matchup of the county 2B entrants.
