Wanted – Information concerning Franklin A. Zottman, last heard from at Jocko, Missoula county, Mont., Oct. 7, 1883, when about to leave for Ainsworth, W.T.
Any information concerning him, dead or alive, will be most thankfully received by his father, Daniel K. Zottman, Burlington, Vermont.
Chinese New Year’s was celebrated in this city with all the noise necessary to impress upon the minds of others information that it was Chinese New Year’s.
Posters about town announce an old folks’ dance for next Monday evening. No unmarried persons will be allowed to participate. Everybody who attends is expected to take a basket of food and one dollar and half in silver.
The Century and one or two other prominent periodicals have been permitted to publish short extracts from “Huckleberry Finn,” Mark Twain’s latest book, which will be issued on the 15th of next month. This book is said to be the best work of the author and is brim full of good things. G.W. Sutherland of this city is authorized to take subscriptions.

The Bankrupt Sales Co. has bought the stock of dry goods which R.H. Dreger recently turned over to his creditors and will reopen the store tomorrow with one of the biggest money saving sales ever held in Whitman County.
Mrs. A.E. Stuht and Mrs. D.C. Woodward entertained a large number of friends at a Valentine party last Saturday afternoon. Five hundred was played. Mrs. W.F. Libman won the prize.
Everybody is getting wise by attending the Hubbard Debating society, which has become an event of great pleasure, as well as instruction. The question for discussion Friday night is, “Resolved; that the young men of today, in Washington, have greater opportunities for making money than ever before.”

In the past four months, Bill Baker, night marshal, has found 50 doors on Main Street unlocked or open, mostly front doors. He usually calls the proprietor on the phone or leaves a note in the cash register.
Edward Holst was killed in a runaway on his farm at LaCrosse Wednesday afternoon. He was riding in a low-wheeled wagon with the reins around his waist when his team became fractious, plunged down a steep hill, tore out two fences, passed the house and barn and came to a stop at a fence near the highway. Holst was dragged nearly a quarter of a mile. His head was crushed and jaw broken by the front wheel.
The legislature has enacted a law putting school elections under the authority and supervision of the county superintendent of schools, as they were before the decision of the supreme court last spring, which put them under the county elections board.

Rodney Ochs of Colfax posed for cameramen last Thursday morning with Sen. John Kennedy of Massachusetts at a press conference prior to the senator’s appearance on the WSU campus. Ochs, a member of the university’s Young Democrats, was influential in bringing Sen. Kennedy to campus.
Most of the outside work has been completed on the new gymnasium-multi-purpose-classroom addition being constructed at Endicott. The roof has been finished and most of the windows installed. Workers were ready to pour the gym floor last week, but load restrictions on the Colfax-Endicott road prohibited it.
Work began last week on the addition to the parsonage of the Lamont Community church with the men of the church doing construction. Upon completion the addition will add four rooms to the present structure.

Two new branch banks, one in LaCrosse and the other in Endicott, are planned by the Bank of Whitman for this spring. The bank received notice of approval Monday from the state superintendent of banking. President James Tribbett said the success of the bank’s first branch at Washtucna helped launch plans for the two additional branches.
A proposal to install a time and temperature clock on top of the courthouse in Colfax is under consideration by commissioners this week. The clock installed atop the courthouse in 1955 has refused to work for over 10 years in spite of numerous efforts to repair it.

Several Whitman County residents traveled to the Lewis & Clark Convention Center in Clarkston to testify Thursday in support of saving Snake River dams. The meeting, which primarily drew testimony from a pro-salmon contingent, lasted until late into the night as officials heard on four alternatives for saving fish, including whether or not to breach the dams.
County Commissioner Les Wigen is sponsoring a proposal to change two-and-a-half miles of River Road near Pullman to Brayton Road in honor of long-time WSU baseball coach Charles (Bobo) Brayton.
Colfax Treasurer Bob Lothspeich reported to the city council this week t McDonald Park has been approved for a $69,211 IAC grant which means the state will match local donations of cash, material and equipment up to that amount.
