Library will host musical programs
Whitman County Library will host a series of musical programs in March. Featured entertainers this year will be Bruce and Susan Matley with eight programs scheduled around the county between March 17 and 20.
The programs are provided through a partnership between WCL, the Friends of WCL and the Humanities Washington Inquiring Minds speaker series.
Four of the programs will be in branch libraries or community rooms. The other four will be at the Endicott School, Garfield School, Dahmen Barn and the new performing arts building in Rosalia.
Focus of the programs slated at the schools is “History at Your Front Door” with depiction’s of Native Americans, Early Explores and Pioneers in Southeastern Washington. The other six programs will feature Cowboy Songs and Poetry.
The dates and locations are: March 17 – Endicott School, St. John Library, Albion Library; March 18 – Lacrosse and Tekoa Library; March 19 – Garfield School and Rosalia Performing Arts Center; March 20 – Dahmen Barn in Uniontown.
Performance times are available at local libraries.
Uniontown date set for 57th sausage feed
Uniontown’s 57th annual Sausage Feed to be Sunday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The menu features homemade sausage from a secret recipe, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, rolls, pie and beverages. Dinner will be served on a first come format, but meals to go are available with no wait. Proceeds from the dinner go to maintain the Community Building.
For the third consecutive year, Artisans at the Dahmen Barn will present a free concert in the barn on the same day as the feed. The German band “Auf Gehts” will play from 1 to 3 p.m.
A Sausage Feed logo contest is being held this year. Information will be available at the feed or by contacting Leslee Miller. The prize will be free tickets to the dinner next year.
Empire books Basnight
Tekoa’s Empire Theatre has booked Jim Basnight and his rock ‘n roll group for next Saturday, March 6, at 7 p.m. He promises a full range of music from rock to pop to punk and blues. This is a return visit to Tekoa for Basnight; he has played at the Cafe Artisan and also at the Tekoa Jaycee Club.
Exhibit at Bank Left features Colfax artist
Colfax artist Carrie Vielle mixed media exhibit, “Emancipation: A Glorious Obsession,” will showcase a new collection of paintings which reflect the transitions in her life over the past year. The reception with the artist will be March 6 from 1-5 p.m., with live music from 1-3:30 p.m. The exhibit will runs until April 3.
Following the reception, the Bank Left Bistro will feature an authentic Egyptian Dinner prepared by Samir Shahat as part of our art and culture series. The dinner from 6 to 8 will also feature live music. The price for this dinner is $35 per person.

Taste ‘n Tear 4H
On Saturday, February 20, the 4H club Taste ‘n’ Tear met to sew their pants patterns. Carol Salusso was there to help fit the pants.
For their next meeting they will start an embroidery project so participants should bring an embroidery hoop. A six inch hoop would be preferred. Participants should also bring their basted pants pattern.

A girl, Emma Kristine, was born Feb. 10, 2010 at Providence Medical Center in Hood River, Ore., to Adam and Kristi Nelson of White Salmon. Maternal grandparents are Mary Ann Wigen of Colfax and the late Bob Wigen. Paternal grandparents are Gary and Linda Nelson of Port Orchard and John and Sandy Saffell of Lacey. Great-grandparents are Loretta Kissler, Colfax, and Richard and Betty Pierce, Steilacoom. Weighing seven pounds, four ounces at birth, the baby joins one brother, Liam, 2.

A daughter, Ellouise May, was born Feb. 16, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Nicole and Justin Lewis. Maternal grandparents are Jeff Blakeley and Chris Hasse. Paternal grandparents are Dan and Cheri Lewis. Weighing six pounds, 14 ounces, the baby joins one brother, Avery.
Couch son born
A boy, Logan Lee, was born Feb. 18, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Samantha Duckworth and Eric Couch. Maternal grandmother is Belinda Duckworth, Colfax. Paternal grandparents are Sandy and Blake Couch, Oakesdale. Weighing nine pounds, 13 ounces at birth, the baby joins sibling, Staley Taylor.

BOOKMARK
Colfax Library will host a cake decorating class for teens and adults on Sunday, Feb. 28, from 2-3:30 in the temporary library upstairs in the US Bank Building. Registration is required.
Erica Willson, an experienced cake decorator, will provide decorating tips and shortcuts. A fee of $10 will offset the cost of supplies. including mixing bowls, spatulas, a fondant package and buttercream frosting. Attendees from previous sessions may bring their own supplies. To register:

Librarian Jill Cocking will be the feature rumpus coordinator for the preschool time beginning March 4 at 11 a.m. for ages 4 and older. “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak will the theme for the educational program.
Only a few days remain to exchange Food For Fines at the library.
In celebration of Read Across America Day, WCL’s Book Bear will visit Jennings Elementary March 1-2. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and communities will celebrate too!
