Under a “Champions Again in 2010” banner the Colfax girls basketball team wrapped up the season at the banquet table Monday night. The team honored six seniors who were part of the campaign to a second straight 2B title with four straight wins last week in the Spokane Arena.
Coach Corey Baerlocher noted the departure of the six seniors will mark the end of another big chapter in Colfax girls’ hoop history and challenged the younger team members to start work on the next chapter.
“I feel lucky to be around kids who are so willing to buy in on what I do,” Baerlocher noted before recognizing the seniors, Carmen Hall, Rachel and Kayla Johnson, Emily Shaw, Brittney Burke and Kayleigh Maltone.
Rachel Johnson was named for the inspirational award, and Kayla Johnson for the most valuable player trophy. Kayla Johnson won the same honor for the second year at the state tourney the previous week.
The Johnson cousins in their farewell talk applied David Letterman’s Top 10 comedy routine to Baerlocher. “The Look” trait topped the list.
Emily Shaw won the Hustle honor. Coach Baerlocher credited Shaw with “flying around” on defense at an intense level during the four-game state campaign and hitting some almost impossible passing angles to the back side. Emily’s pending graduation marks the end of the Shaw sisters who have worn number 44 in the Colfax hoop campaign.
Amelie Bruya, who moved into the point guard slot for parts of the campaign, was voted most improved.
Coach Baerlocher also this year rolled out the Bulldog Award trophy, something that doesn’t get presented at the end of every season. Maltone and Shaw received the honor in recognition for their support of their volunteer work with the junior high program and other parts of the campaign.
Other varsity players at the head table were juniors Brooke Webber, Shaina Simonson, and Raven Elkins, and sophomores Misty Skelton and Hannah Harazin.
Coach Tom Fowler noted his junior varsity team compiled an 18-1 record on the season with their lone loss to double A Lakeside.
Jayvee players recognized were Rachel Robinson, Paige Mackleit, Taylor Lange, Erin Cox, Elizabeth Hatley, Rebecca Hardie, Amy Hickman, Lauren Moore, Maggee Cochran and J.C. VonTersch.
Cheerleader Coach Rhonda Pittman recognized Karley Johnson and Alex Mackelit, cheer co-captains; Reagan Lowe, Heather Harder, Rachel Napier and Allie Vorderbrueggen.
Also recognized were Brooklyn Schmidt, Taylor Larsen and Nicole Sheer, managers, and Brady Cornelius, stats keeper.
Coach Baerlocher urged players and volunteers to help with the Colfax team camp which will run June 21-24. The camp brings in teams from around the state and proceeds are used to underwrite costs of other camps and summer competition for Bulldog hoopsters.
