Palouse library will host artists’ intro
Palouse Library will host a special Meet the Artists event featuring David Wold, oil painter, and Lauren McCleary, paper sculptor, Tuesday, April 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. David has created a series of scenes of downtown Palouse and local landscapes, as well as some portraits that will adorn the library walls. Lauren will feature her paper sculpting in the windows, and a surprise exhibit in the display case.
David Wold was raised in Alamo, Calif .; When he wasn’t riding around the San Francisco Bay Area on a motorcycle, he was canoeing the Potomac River at his family’s farm in Montross, Va. Since then, he has spent time living in Arizona, Mexico, the Czech Republic, and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
He’s worked as an English teacher, a scuba rescue diver, a racecar team crew chief, a mechanic, carpenter, a geologist and a wooden boatbuilder. In 2007, he and Mary Rothlisberger passed through Palouse and decided to stay. He works in Palouse as a carpenter, musician, artist and freelance cryptozoologist.
Lauren McCleary grew up in Denver, Colo. She graduated from Metropolitan State College of Denver with a degree in art education and from Washington State University with a master’s degree in fine arts.
The Wold and McCleary exhibit will remain in the library until May 7.
Palouse Library is open Tuesdays 11a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays 3 to 7 p.m., and Friday noon – 6 p.m.
Spaghetti at Lincoln will aid camp fund
A spaghetti feed will be at Lincoln Middle School from 5-8 p.m. April 16 to raise funds for the fifth graders’ trip to Camp Wooten the week of May 10. Franklin, Jefferson and Sunnyside School fifth graders each year attend the camp session. With budget cuts, funding the camp has become more difficult for the district so staffers and fifth graders plan to raise funds at the spaghetti feed.
Dinner will include spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and milk, water or coffee. Advanced tickets are available at any of the three Pullman Elementary Schools. Costs are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 4 through 12 years old, children 3 and under free.
To make a donation, make out a check to Jefferson ASB, and mail it to 1150 NW Bryant, Pullman, 99163. List 5th grade camp in the subject line.
Malden Library hours
Malden branch of the Whitman County Library will be open an additional two hours a week with the support of grant funding. Effective March 23, the library will be open Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The Occupational Resource Connections program (WORC) provides these new hours until June with the goal of assisting people seeking a job or career assistance.
Children’s activities at the Malden Library will be each Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.
Clubs & Youth Groups
PEOColfax Chapter AF PEO met at the home of Robyn Johnson March 22 with Peggy Kehne as assistant hostess. Jill Solbrack was initiated as a new member. Charli Hochsprung gave a program on a hobby of her, quilting. New yearbooks were given out with next year’s theme “The Spice of Life.”
Nancy Waldron reported she has recently become a licensed vet tech.
Next meeting will be April 12 with Diane Solbrack hosting and Sherry Cox giving the program featuring her husband, Don Cox.
Historical SocietyThe spring trip for the society will be to the Nez Perce Natonal Historical Park at Spaulding April 10. The tour will begin at 10 a.m.
Members can meet at 8:45 a.m. at the lot in front of Ace Hardware to caravan to Spaulding or make the trip on their own.
A donation to the park of $10 per person is suggested.
Malden Knit WitsThe “Knit Wits” of Malden have changed their meeting day from Thursday to Tuesday, from 1 to 3 p.m., with Carolyn Sturgeon hostess. Anyone at any stage of knitting or crocheting is encouraged to attend.

Sitton grandson bornA boy, Clayton Morgan, was born March 17, 2010, to Jeremiah and Heather Johnson of Spokane. Grandparents are Jeff and Judy Sitton, St. John; Randall Johnson, Davenport, and Ken and Renee Harrison, Spokane Valley. Great-grandparents are Dean and Doreen Sutherland, Washtucna; Bennie and Beverly Sitton, Washtucna, and Clyde and Carol Vela, Sprague. Weighing six pounds, 12 ounces at birth, the baby joins two brothers, Jaymason, 4, and Blake, 3.

ART
“Slag, The Anti-Art Glass”, will be featured at the University of Idaho’s Prichard Art Gallery in downtown Moscow, Feb. 24 to April 10.
MUSIC
Seattle composer Wayne Horvitz will present his oratorio “Heartsong of Charging Elk” March 27 at 7 p.m. in WSU’s Kimbrough Music Building, Room 101. The oratorio for four voices and 10 chamber instruments is based on James Welch’s 2000 novel “The Heartsong of Charging Elk” It tells the story of an Oglala Sioux who was hospitalized in 1889 for broken ribs and influenza in Marseilles, France, while touring with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. After the show moved on, Charging Elk recovered, but was left stranded in the French city, unable to speak French or English.
Horvitz will travel to Pullman with his musicians and a conductor. He will provide a short lecture and answer questions about the oratorio,
A native of New York who now resides in Seattle, Horvitz is an internationally known keyboardist, composer, and producer.
The event will also bring to campus Kathryn Shanley and Raymond J. Demallie, who are experts on James Welch and on Black Elk, who did travel with the Wild West Show and actually was stranded in France. He eventually made his way to England and then back to his home on the Great Plains. They will speak at 5:30 p.m. March 27 in Kimbrough 101. Professor Shanley is a professor of Native American studies at the University of Montana. Demallie is chancellor’s professor of anthropology and adjunct professor of folklore, director of the American Indian Studies Research Institute at Indiana University.
On campus continued
Award-winning guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque will give two performances with students and musical groups from the WSU School of Music April 13. Haque will perform at noon with WSU students in the CUB and join WSU’s vocal jazz ensemble and the WSU Big Band for a performance in Kimbrough Music Hall at 8 p.m.
After the performances, he will play at Rico’s Pub in downtown Pullman at 10:30 p.m.
His visit is sponsored by the WSU School of Music, The Jazz Society and the Coug Parents Fund. All events are free and open to the public.
WSU pianist Jeff Savage and cellist Ruth Boden will perform music from Russian composers at 8 p.m. April 16 in Bryan Hall Theater during “An Evening of Russian Music.” The last of this season’s Faculty Artist Series, the program will include the Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich sonatas for cello and piano, as well as the Pezzo Capricioso by Tchaikovsky.
All proceeds will benefit the School of Music scholarship fund. General admission is $10, $5 for seniors and non-WSU students, and free for WSU students Tickets will be available in the lobby one hour before concert time.

April 9 marks the annual Teen Dance at the Palouse Empire Fairground. Cost is just $5 and the event is co-sponsored by the Friends of Whitman County Library and Whitman County 4H.
Looking for a fun Spring Break activity? Bring a friend and play Wii Sports from 1: to 2:30 Wednesday March 31 at the Colfax library. For additional Children’s program information contact Sheri or Nichole.
Support children throughout Whitman County with the library’s Annual Penny Drive. All coins collected fund Summer Reading and children’s educational programs with proceeds staying in the town where they are donated.
Preschoolers are invited to Thursday Storytime to learn about the letter Y and a whole lot more. Baby Time for ages 0-2 years is from 10:10-10:30, Toddler Time for ages 2-3 is from 10:30-11:00 and Preschool Time for ages 4 and up is from 11:00-11:30 at the Colfax Library.
Play and Learn encourages educational play and facilitates valuable childhood interactions each Friday from 10 to 11:30. Infants, toddlers, young children and those who care for them are all welcome.
