My favorite recipe - Meet Milaine Rosslow, Hay

Ever since moving to Whitman County, Milaine Rosslow has been more commonly known by her nickname, the Buggy Lady, than by her actual name.

“People started calling me that. It just caught on,” she said.

Milaine drives and competes with buggies- she also builds Scotsman carts and sells them through her business, thebuggylady. com.

“I’ve trained driving horses and ponies for over 30 years,” she noted.

Milaine grew up in the Spokane Valley. One day a neighbor drove by with a big gelding pulling a cart and he asked her to get in. She fell in love.

“I’ve done driving ever since then,” she said. She worked with Rex Blackmere, a professional who drives ponies and chariots, studied under old-style teamsters and attended clinics around the Northwest.

Milaine raised Ponies of America for 20 years in Valley Ford and has driven horses of all sizes, from draft horses to minis.

She started off competing in driving shows and pleasure classes, but found that boring.

Now she competes in combined driving events which are three part competitions.

Milaine isn’t the only one who likes the competitions.

Dealer, the miniature horse she has been driving for about seven years is only 36 inches tall, but competes against horses of all sizes at the competitions. Of 86 entries at one event, he came in first.

“It’s amazing how strong they are,” she said of the miniature horses. “The minis have become my favorite,” she said, noting they are easy to keep, have a nice personality, love working and aren’t as stubborn as other breeds.

Milaine plans to change her entries in the competitions this year by driving a pair, Dealer and Spitfire, who was purchased in Colton. Competitions are in Oregon, Ethel and Spokane.

Before doing competitions, Milaine took her ponies into the mountains and drove on old logging trails. She has packed into the Bob Marshal and Great Bear Wilderness areas in Montana and along the Pacific Coast Trail in Washington.

“I couldn’t find anyone who built a cart that was light weight, steel wheels and super smooth suspension over rough ground,” she said. So, she designed her own and has sold them all over the United States and Canada. Last week she sent her first cart overseas, to Tokyo University of Agriculture. She builds carts for all sizes of animals. Her cart covers are also made for all sizes of carts.

While training horses in Spokane, she received a great report on the Palouse country from a LaCrosse area resident who brought his horse in for training. So nine years ago, Milaine moved and has resided in the Hay area ever since.

Milaine has seven minis, two ponies, two horses and several dogs. Her niece, Anna Mae, comes down from Spokane to help out. Anna Mae lived with Milaine until she graduated from high school.

Milaine belongs to the American Driving Society, Drive Your Crazy Group out of the Tri-Cities, and the Selkirk Driving Groups.

She spends about one week a month in Kennewick where she helps a 4H group with their events. Milaine also teaches driving clinics.

Milaine takes occasional breaks to do something else she loves, travel. She had been to Peru, Kenya and China.

“Now I’m starting to travel in the United States,” she said, noting plans for a trip to the Grand Canyon in May.
