Granville Beitzel
The memorial service for Granville Edward Beitzel, 86, will be at Spangle Community Christian Church, Saturday April 17, at 11 a.m. A potluck reception will follow in the church basement.
Mr. Beitzel died April 1, 2010, at home from complications of injuries sustained in an automobile accident at the intersection of Highway 195 and the Cheney-Spangle Road.
Born to Ralph Arthur and Blanch Irene Stuart Beitzel in Atchison, Kan., on Dec. 15, 1923, he was raised at Atchison and graduated from high school there. He earned a degree in ministerial studies at Phillips University in Enid, Okla., and went on to complete 156 semester hours of graduate work at Butler University, University of Indiana, University of Tulsa, University of Idaho, Washington State University and Eastern Washington State College. His studies prepared him for careers in preaching, teaching and social work.
He and Mildred Isabelle King were married June 17, 1945, at Abilene, Kan. They spent their honeymoon caring for underprivileged inner-city children at Christ Mission Camp near Youngstown, Ohio.
He went on to pastor at Christian Churches including ones in Langdon and Pittsburg, Kansas; Brooklyn, Indiana; and Palouse, Colfax and Garfield.
He lived in Palouse were he was a fifth and sixth grade teacher. He found many creative ways to help his students with the learning process, including inventing teaching machines he hand-made with parts he took from pinball machines. He enjoyed reading, fishing, working with the Boy Scouts, backpacking, camping and gardening. He was quick to master new skills: repairing engines and appliances, carpentry and electrical work, and his favorite of all - photography. As a proud young father, he often smelled of chemicals as he emerged from his darkroom with yet another creative picture in hand.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred; three daughters; Linda (Michael) Chase, Marilyn (Daniel) Wear, Eileen (Dennis) Shaw; one son, David (Joanna) Beitzel; eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Foy L. Cochrane
A memorial service for Foy L. Cochrane, 89, will be today, Thursday, April 15, at the Princeton Church of the Nazarene at 11 a.m. with the Revs. Larry Veith and Kathy Kramer officiating. The Potlatch VFW post and a U. S. Navy honor guard will conduct military honors. Urn burial at a later date will be at the Mendenhall Cemetery.
Mr. Cochrane died early Saturday morning, April 10, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow.
Born Nov. 12, 1920, to Eugene and Edna Bunney Cochrane at the family home on Chambers Flat near Harvard, Idaho, he attended the Chambers Flat Country School and Potlatch High School. He joined the United States Navy Sept. 30, 1942, and was with the first group of recruits to train at Faragut State Park during WWII. He served in the South Pacific aboard LSTs. He was discharged Dec. 30, 1945, as a motor machinists mate first class.
He married Joan L. March July 18, 1948, in Spokane, and they made their home at Harvard. In 1952 they purchased the farm on O’Reilly Road at Princeton, Idaho, and resided there until 2006 when they moved to Potlatch. He farmed part time for friends Craig Fleener and John Kuehner for about 20 years. He also worked at local sawmills, Clearwater Power Co., Everett Will Tractor Co. and drove a fuel truck for the Co-op in Princeton and Palouse. Foy also worked for several summers for Cay’s Rock Crusher.
He attended several reunions with his Navy shipmates, and had a great time reminiscing about old times. A retired Potlatch Volunteer Fireman, he was a member of the VFW Post in Potlatch, a former member of the Odd Fellows and Moose Lodges and Cayuse Kids Saddle Club.
Survivors include his wife Joan, Potlatch; one son, Donald (Kim) Cochrane, Princeton; three daughters, Nancy Biggerstaff, Spokane; Valerie (Jack) Douglas, Mullen, Idaho; Verlynn (Myron) Emerson, Potlatch; three brothers, Marlyn Cochrane, St. Maries; Charles Cochrane, Princeton; Duane Cochrane, Potlatch; eight grandchildren, eight step grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials go to the Potlatch Ambulance Fund, c/o the Latah Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 264, Potlatch, ID, the Potlatch VFW, Grace Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Alice C. Gardner
Funeral services for Alice Gardner, 91, will be Saturday, April 17, at 2 p.m. at the Oakesdale Community Presbyterian Church with Pastor Erik Buhl officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakesdale Cemetery. Mrs. Gardner died Saturday, April 10. 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax. Viewing will be Thursday afternoon from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa.
Born Feb. 16, 1919, near Hitterdal, Minn., to George and Marie Larson Sabin. She was raised in Minnesota and attended school there. She married Lyle Gardner at Detroit Lakes, Minn., Dec. 8, 1939.
They moved to Seattle in 1941 and in 1946 they moved to Grandview where he operated a plumbing business. In 1955, they moved to Oakesdale where Mr. Gardner and Byron Smith started Gardner and Smith Fertilizer Company. They couple retired in 1987 and continued to live in Oakesdale until moving to Spokane Valley in 2004. Mr. Gardner died in 2007, and she moved to LaDow Court in Garfield in October of 2009.
Alice was a member of the Oakesdale Community Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, quilting and embroidery. She loved being surrounded by friends and family and will be remembered for her sense of humor and her generosity.
Survivors include two sons, David (Pat) Gardner of Tumwater and Robert (Darlene) Gardner of Oakesdale; three daughters, Linda Gardner of Ritzville; Sheryl Clark of Naches and Jo Lynn (Les) Pfaff of Farmington; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Oakesdale Community Presbyterian Church, Oakesdale Cemetery, or to the Union Gospel Mission in Spokane.
Margaret Jane Hatley
A memorial service celebrating the life of Margaret Jane Hatley, 80, longtime Pullman resident and retired registered nurse, will be at 1:30 p.m. today, Thursday, April 15, 2010, at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman. A private graveside service will be at the Pullman Cemetery.
She died Friday, April 9, 2010 at Tri-State Hospital in Clarkston.
Born Oct. 22, 1929, in Osceola, Iowa, to Earl and Loretta Lane Baker, she grew up in Osceola and following graduation from Osceola High School attended nursing school at Nebraska Methodist College in Omaha. Following her graduation, she moved to Pullman in 1951 where she began her nursing career at Pullman Memorial Hospital. She worked as an OR nurse before moving to the OB department where she spent more than 30 years. She retired in 1994 after a 43-year career.
Margaret married Durward (DC) Hatley, July 3, 1953, in Pullman, and they made their home on Wawawai Road since 1958.
She had a love of quilting, crocheting and all forms of needlework. Margaret loved to work with their sheep and always took her vacation during lambing season. She loved her home in the country, flowers and the birds.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2003.
Surviving are her two daughters Kristine Alvarez Delos Santos and Elisa Flach, both of Pullman; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the local Blood Bank or the American Kidney Foundation.

Mid C. Morrison
Graveside services for Mid C. Morrison, Sr., 55, of Colton will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at the Pullman Cemetery. A gathering of friends & family will follow at their home,
He died of cancer at his home in Colton last Thursday, April 8, 2010.
Born May 11, 1954, in Lewiston, to James Morrison, Sr. and Janita Holbrook, he was raised on the family farm on Boone Hill road outside of Colton and attended Pullman schools. He married Debra Dillon Nov. 13, 1973, and they made the farm their home. They divorced in 1997. He worked for her father Ray Dillon at Dillon Electric in Pullman. The company is now known as QC Electric, Moscow. His health forced him to retire in July of 2009.
He and Jane Calkins of Lewiston were married May 24, 2002. They shared a lot of happy memories together including their two dogs, Missy and Cujo. Jane took a leave of absence from her job six months ago to stay at home to take care of Mid.
He enjoyed 4-wheeling, hunting on the family farm, golfing and flying a remote control helicopter. Saturday afternoons were reserved for helping his mother with any needed chores.
Survived are his wife, Jane, at the family home; his children James Morrison; Jessica Reilly and Mid C. Morrison, Jr. all of Lewiston; his step children Brent Willows; Lora Fraizer and Amanda Calkins; two brothers David Morrison and Jim Morrison, Jr. of Colton; his sister Jackie Keller-Mintonye, Colton; his mother Janita Sims-Brown of Clarkston; step-mother Ella Morrison of Lewiston and 10 grandchildren.

Hans Petersen
A funeral for Hans Petersen, 30, Colfax High School graduate who died April 7 from injuries sustained in a fall at a construction job in California, was Sunday in California, according to information received here at Peace Lutheran Church. Plans will be made for a memorial service at a later date at Peace Lutheran.
Petersen was a member of the 1998 class of Colfax High School. His parents, the Rev. Glenn and Carol Petersen, now reside in Anchorage, Alaska, where the Rev. Petersen serves as pastor of the Central Lutheran Church.
Members of Peace Lutheran Church here were notified of the loss by Carol Petersen late last Wednesday. The Petersens’ two other children, both Colfax High School graduates, are Dr. Thea Petersen, now in Billings, Mont., and Carl Petersen who is also in California.
The Petersens raised their family in Colfax when he served as pastor at Peace Lutheran.
Clinton J. Callaway
Clinton J. Callaway, 80, a resident of Pullman, died of cancer early Sunday morning, April 11, at the Whitman Senior Living Center in Pullman. Cremation will take place and a graveside service will be Sunday, April 18, at 1:30 p.m. at the Albion Cemetery with an informal reception following at Clint’s Albion shop. The Rev. Bill Lyons will officiate.
He was born in Pullman, Jan. 8, 1930. Mr. Callaway was a plumber for Washington State University. Additionally he spent 30 years with Pullman Laundry and for many years operated Callaway Disposal in Albion.
Clint and Mary were married May 5, 1961 and lived in Pullman and Albion. He enjoyed metalworking, repair work and creating new innovations in his shop. He will be also be remembered for his sense of humor and ability to tell great stories.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Callaway Pullman; two daughters, Virginia (John) Henry of Spokane; Anna (Jerry) Harper of Pullman; two sons, Bruce (Gloria) Kenoyer of Thorpe; Glen (Charleen) Kenoyer of Coeur d’Alene; his brother, Kenny (Rosie) Callaway of Colfax; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Robert Peter Schweiger
Memorial Mass for Robert Peter Schweiger, 93, life-long LaCrosse area farmer, will be celebrated Saturday, May 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse. Interment will be at 9:30 a.m. at the LaCrosse Cemetery.
He died April 5, 2010, at Sacred Heart in Spokane.
Born Sept. 26, 1916, to Joseph B. and Emma Swanson Schweiger at the family farm at LaCrosse, he graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1935. Robert farmed and ranched in LaCrosse his entire life, but he especially loved raising his cattle. He semi-retired in the 1980s and after having lived in his childhood home for 79 years, moved into LaCrosse in 1995. Robert moved to the Courtyard in Colfax in 2006.
Robert was a quiet and reserved gentleman all of his life, and dedicated to his family and God. He was a member of the Grange and of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.
The family suggests memorials to St. Joseph’s Altar Guild or La Crosse Dollars for Scholars.
