Mary Bertrand, president, reported on the status of the LaCrosse Arts Council. It was formed to serve the needs of the citizens of LaCrosse and surrounding communities and was initiated in 2005. The first meeting was called to determine interest in such a council. A number of people came who supported the idea, but didn’t necessarily wish to be members. Many were enthusiastic about the concepts and possibilities for sprucing up the town.
The idea of a Spring Faire took hold and the first faire was in April 2006. The community responded and encouraged the council to go ahead.
Proceeds from raffles, bake sales, gift baskets, aprons and donations led to project planning. Projects carried out over the next couple of years included Steve’s building (next to Post Office) painted; paint and awnings on the TeaPot Cafe; two dilapidated buildings next to the TeaPot painted; paint donated for the Outreach building; $500 donated for the roof on the new Food Bank; paint and cleanup of the Dan Luvaas building, including trim and plywood over the door. A painter contracted to do the job cost $3,800.
Spring Faire in 2006, 2007, 2008 cost approximately $1500 each. The council has yet to show a profit. Plans will begin next January for another Spring Faire.
The concert in Hooper last August netted enough money for painting of the Luvaas building.
Upcoming projects include a Mother’s Day bake sale May 7 at the Teapot. Mother’s Day Gift Baskets will also be on sale.
The next sale will be casserole dinners in August at the end of harvest followed by Thanksgiving Pilgrim Pies and Christmas Cookie Bake Sale.
