Targeting a 10-0 win string posted by the league-leading Davenport Gorillas, Colfax softball players rolled north Saturday for a Bi-County showdown. They came within a run of stopping the D streak in the first game and then dynamited it with a 16-hit attack in the second game.
The split left Davenport at 11-1 and Colfax at 10-2 with two league rounds left.
Davenport senior Kenzie Graber and Colfax sophomore Amy Hickman battled in both games.
In the first game, Davenport posted a 3-0 lead after four innings and picked up two more in the top of the sixth for a 5-4 win.
The Bulldogs came back to score two runs in each of the last two innings. They had two runners on base in the seventh but couldn’t get them to the plate.
Hickman fanned two Gorillas and walked six in the first game.
The Bulldogs out-hit Davenport 8-5 in the opener with Christa Nyholm tagging three singles. Brittney Burke had a one-hop homer and a single and Kayleigh Maltone slugged a triple. Danielle Herne and Brooke Webber each also had a single in the first game.
Colfax stopped the Gorilla string with an 11-2 win fueled by 16 hits in the second game. The Bulldogs led 6-0 after five innings and added five more runs in the last two frames.
Davenport scored one run each in the last two innings.
Hickman struck out five and walked just one in slinging the win.
Burke had three more hits with a double and triple. Catcher Carmen Hall paired doubles.
Herne tripled and singled, and Nyholm singled and doubled. Brook Waldo also tagged a double.
Webber had two singles and Sidney Huber, Maltone, Rachel Robinson and Hickman added singles.
Davenport’s defense also had four errors in the meltdown.
Colfax was rained out of a game with the SJE Eagles Tuesday. That game has been set for today. The next league round for the Bulldogs will be a trip to Northwest Christian Tuesday.
