‘Dogs on hold after league sweep

Mellor makes leap for first

Colfax senior Sam Mellor leaps for first base Friday in the first game of a doubleheader with Liberty while Jacob Schmauch of the Lancers attempts to cover the bag. Colfax Bulldogs wrapped up a sweep of the Bi-County Tuesday with two wins at Northwest Christian. The two wins at NWC followed a pair over Liberty last Friday for a four-win finish.

The league sweep puts the Bulldogs in a two-week bye while the rest of the pack plays off for slots for district finish. That means Colfax will be without action until the Bi-County qualifiers go up against Panorama next May 18 at Avista Field in Spokane.

Coach Mike Parrish doesn’t relish a two-week sitdown for the club. Because they have already played 20 games, the Bulldogs can’t even pick up a tuner game during the lull.

Tuesday at Northwest Christian Colfax hammered the Crusaders 16-1 in the first game and 14-0 in the second game.

Brandon Hoadley gave up five hits, struck out five and walked zero for the win.

Joe Johnson, who had three hits with a homer, and Tanner Gay, who had two homers, bagged 12 of the Colfax RBIs in the game. Hoadley had three hits and JJ Robinson and Dustin Huber had doubles. Sam Mellor had three hits.

Huber pitched a one-hit shutout in the second game, and the Bulldog offense kept churning out the hits, 18 in the second game.

Huber fanned nine and walked just five. Joe Winfrey doubled for the lone Crusader hit.

Johnson had four hits in the second game with a double, and Gay had three with a double. That’s a total of 12 hits from the two seniors.

Tyler Morse and Tyler McNannay each had two hits with a homer and Hoadley paired doubles.

The Bulldogs went to NWC after rolling past Liberty Friday in the last round at McDonald Park.

They took the Lancers 10-0 in the first game after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end it.

Hoadley struck out eight and walked just two in throwing a one-hitter to win the opener.

Coach Mike Parrish credited Liberty starter Brian Mangis with the best opponent performance yet against the Colfax offense. He held the Bulldogs to just five hits.

Liberty errors accounted for most of the four Colfax runs in the sixth. McNanny had the lone RBI hit.

Huber pitched a no-hitter for the 17-2 win in the second game.

He had a rough start and actually fell behind when Liberty scored twice in the first inning. A hit batter, walk, passed ball and two steals put the Lancers in front.

Colfax came back to tie it at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning and then scored seven runs in each of the next two innings.

Will Hatley, Jo Johnson and JJ Robinson each had three hits with a double to lead the Colfax bats. Morse had two hits with a double.
