Grainman Jim Kelly retires

Don and Sherrill Nelson attended a retirement dinner May 1 at the Washington Wheat Growers building in Ritzville for Sherrill’s brother, Jim Kelly. Jim has worked in the grain business all his life and has just retired from the Ritzville Warehouse Co. Jim and his wife, Carol, live in Lind.

On Sunday, Don and Sherrill had Mother’s Day dinner with Keith and Staci Nelson.

Tammie and Tom Cate and family along with Jamie and John Gant and family came to the ranch Sunday to make Mother’s Day dinner for their mother, Kaye Bailey.

Betty Stone was a Mother’s Day guest at the home of Debbie and Kevin Gaffney in Cheney. On Monday evening Betty hosted the Pinochle Club. JoLane Danielson won high, Nita Polda won low and Arletta Hoffman got the galloper.

Nita and Matt Polda took in the Plant Fair at the Spokane Community College Sunday. That evening they had dinner with Myrna and Frank Rehn at the home in the valley.

Last Saturday, Bonnie Swannack and her quilting friends went on a shop hop entitled I Sew So I Hop. The 289-mile trip took them to Pomeroy, Lewiston, Deary, Moscow, Viola, Palouse, Pullman and Colfax. Making the trip with Bonnie were Nancy Kirkland, Lora Paulson and Ginny Muench.

Nancy and Andrea Wecker visited with Dan and Jean Stromberger for three days last weekend. On Sunday night, Bill Stromberger from Edwall and Tim and Arlene from Davenport came for a Pizza Party.

Dan and Jean Stromberger attended the services for Dorothy Stromberger in the Ritzville Lutheran Church Friday. A large crowd attended partly because of the 68 members in the immediate family. Dorothy was married to Art Stromberger, Dan’s brother. They were employed by Claude Shields at one time in about 1945 and lived in a house about a mile south of Lamont.

A recent visitor to the home of Diane and Allen Cook, was Diane’s brother, Ed Dickinson, Norfolk, Va. Ed was doing radio repair work on a Navy ship in Seattle and upon completion of the work, he drove to Lamont. He returned to Seattle early Friday morning to prepare for his return trip to Virginia.

Allen and Diane Cook spent Sunday afternoon at the home of Peggy Miller, Rocklyn. Also visiting were Dennis and Sandi Miller, Logan and Kristen of Kahlotus. The Cook’s returned home early Sunday evening.

Carmen and Leah Swannack competed at the 75th Spokane Junior Livestock Show May 5-7 in Spokane. They showed lambs and goats, judged in the livestock and meats contests, competed in the Lads & Ladies lead contest and the 4H demonstration contest. Carmen won the Grand Champion 4H intermediate class demonstration (her topic was lambing). Carmen also won the Grand Champion 4H intermediate goat showman class. Leah was the reserve Grand Champion intermediate goat showman. It was interesting to note that every kid in the Sprague/Lamont 4H club made it to the finals of goat fitting and showing contest.

Clara O’Keefe won the feeder lamb class in conformation and won the junior division of the Lads and Ladies lead contest.

Beau and Rowdy Brown, sons of Adele and Charlie Brown, competed in the Spokane Junior Livestock Show in Spokane last week. They each entered two pigs and won blue ribbons in fitting and confirmation. Beau received a plaque for receiving the overall score in judging beef and Rowdy received a plaque for overall judging of sheep.
