Wildcats lock up return to title defense

Colton girls Friday defeated Touchet in the eighth inning in a playoff at Washtucna to guarantee a return to Yakima to defend the 1B title they won last year. The Wildcats finished in the number-one SE slot after defeating Touchet 3-2 at Washtucna.

Both Colton and Touchet advance to a SE-NE playoff Saturday at Medical Lake. They will join four NE teams to compete for four state berths out of the regional.

Colton will have a bye in the first round and then play the winner of the St. Michels-Cusick game for seeding at the state show the following week at Yakima.

Friday at Washtucna, Colton and Touchet locked up at 2-2 after seven innings. The Wildcats scored a run in the eighth inning to take a 3-2 win.

The decider was scored when Taylor Nilson drew a walk with two outs, advanced on a hit by Kelsey Moser and then scored on a passed ball.

Moser, who held off Touchet in the bottom of the eighth, allowed 11 hits in pitching the win. She fanned 10 Touchet banners.

Kelsey Moser, Haley Moser and Mikayla Nygreen each had two hits for Colton. Kelsey Moser booked a double and a triple. Kaitlin Druffel also hit a double and Mollie Kramer had the other Colton hit.

The seeding game put Colton up 2-1 over their SE rival after the two clubs split in the regular season.

Colton advanced to Friday’s game against Touchet on a neutral field after shutting down the SJE Eagles 10-0 in the first playoff round at Kramer Field last Thursday.

Kelsey Moser allowed two hits, fanned 12 Eagles and walked two in taking the win.

The Wildcats scored seven in the second inning, one more in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Erin Moser led the 13-hit Colton offense with four hits, including a double and Kelsey Moser booked three hits with a double. Nygreen had two hits with a triple.

Gretchen Van Lith doubled and Dusty Bafus singled for the Eagles.

Kelly Van Lith finished out her SJE sports career in the pitchers circle.

Touchet made the trip to Washtucna after a 12-0 shutout over the LW Tigercats in the first qualification round. The T-cats, who made the trip south as the number-four seed, finished the season at 10-11 overall.

Pitcher Kirsten Stubbs and catcher Gladys Martinez, who started competing in the eight grade, wrapped up their LW careers enroute to graduation. Chelsea McKay, the third senior on the club, was sidelined earlier in the season.
