June 18 cook-off deadline set
Sponsored by the Palouse Chamber of Commerce to promote the use of barley, the Barley Cook-Off offers a of $250 in prize money provided by Palouse Grain Growers Inc., which pearls barley grown locally by co-op members.
Submitted recipes, which must use an easily visible amount of pearled barley, will be prepared by local cooks for evaluation by qualified judges. The top three recipes will receive $75, $50 and $25 cash prizes. These three recipes, plus two honorable mention recipes of the judges’ choice, will be prepared in large quantity for public sampling at the town’s annual celebration Sept. 18. The winner of the People’s Choice will receive an additional $100 cash prize.
Deadline for submission of recipes is June 18. Recipes must be typed – handwritten recipes will not be accepted. They may be e-mailed to grain@palouse.com or mailed to Palouse Grain Growers Inc., Box 118, Palouse, 99161. Please include complete name, mailing address and other contact information.
Submitted recipes will be pre-screened to select 25 recipes for the cook-off. Selection will consider ease of preparation, availability of ingredients and cost. Please limit to 3 submissions per entrant.
A recipe should make 4-6 servings. Recipes will be prepared exactly as written, so don’t forget to include special techniques.
Submission of recipes gives Palouse Chamber of Commerce and Palouse Grain Growers Inc. the right to distribute the recipes without compensation to the entrant.

Bank Left to feature watercolors
“While Listening to Chopin,” a watercolor exhibit by Tekoa artist Linda Fletcher, will be at The Bank Left Gallery in Palouse June 5 to July 3. The exhibit celebrates the charms of spring and the 200th birthday of Chopin. This collection of new paintings is a visual interpretation of his beautiful, influential music.
Opening reception with the artist and live music will be Saturday, June 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. Following the reception, The Bank Left Bistro will feature Feijoada, a traditional Brazilian dinner prepared by Brazilian artist Jocival Ferreira. Price of the dinner is $20. Call or e-mail for reservations.

Work in pastels and ceramics will be on display during June at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. An opening reception will be June 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. and the display will continue through June 27. Passionate about Pastels artists will be at reception. The group formed 10 years ago. The ceramics will feature dinnerware and wheel thrown pottery by Terri Walters from Colton and Judith Marvin from Kendrick. Marvin’s pottery is mostly hand built and organic in design. Walters will show wheel thrown pottery and hand built pottery dinnerware sets and serving pieces.
Dahmen books Paradons
The Paradons, who play music from the 50s, 60s and 70s for listening or dancing, will perform at the Dahmen Barn Saturday, June 5 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The band formed in Orofino, when John Gardner, Joe Musiel and Leon Hendrickson got together calling themselves The Seniors. The group played for school dances in Orofino and the surrounding area. In 1963, the band changed its name to The Fabulous Paradons consist of Musiel, Gardner, John Richardson, Jon Elvin and Larry Riggers. Gardner is the last original member playing in the Paradons.
Clubs & Youth Groups
PEOLinda Marler’s home was the meeting place of Chapter AF of PEO Monday, May 24. Lynn Nelson served at hostess and co-hostess. After a short business meeting Ann Marra gave a program on an art called Needle Punching. She will be conduct classes at the Quilt Shop in June.
Next meeting will be at the Lutheran Church June 14 at 6 p.m. with a salad bar potluck. A report of the state convention will be given at that time by Liane Smith.
On Campus
MUSICMembers of the WSU Solstice Quintet, with special guest pianist Gerald Berthaiume, will present a Summer Concert at 1 p.m. June 5 at the WSU Art Museum. The concert is free of charge and the public is invited to enjoy music and art in an informal setting.
Members of the quintet include Ann Marie Yasinitsky, flute; Keri McCarthy, oboe; Shannon Scott, clarinet and Ryan Hare, bassoon.
Berthaiume is director of the WSU school of music.

Library Friends vice-president Wanda Alderman, Garfield branch manager Crystal Bailey and Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick were all in attendance to honor the business.
Smokin’ Papas provides ice cream treats to summer readers of all ages, and the Weiker’s community newsletter often carries library information of interest.
The Board of Trustees and administration of the Whitman County Rural Library District sponsor the Library Supporter award to recognize those individuals and groups that play an irreplaceable role in supporting and supplementing the library’s budget and activities.
