Young Nighthawks battle at state

A young Tekoa /Oakesdale/ Rosalia team battled for two rounds Friday before bowing out of the state 2B softball show in Yakima. The Nighthawks battled NE contender Davenport for the distance in their opening game before the Gorillas pegged a 14-10 win.

They then went up against LaConner and lost 3-4 in the elimination round.

Both of the ‘hawk opponents also bounced out of the tourney. The Gorillas ran into number-two Adna in the quarter finals and were bounced by number-three DeSales in their second game Saturday after eliminating LaSalle.

LaConner Saturday was eliminated 11-10 by Mary Walker of Springdale in a game which went eight innings.

The ‘hawks Friday scored two runs in the first inning to take a lead on Davenport, but the Gorillas came back to score six runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead. After that, it was a game of chase for the ‘hawks who took the SE title last week with just two seniors and one junior in their lineup.

TOR totaled 10 hits off Gorilla senior pitcher Kenzie Graber. The Nighthawks scored two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to close the gap.

Gorilla batters totaled 16 hits.

The opener included five errors by the Gorillas and three by the ‘hawks.

Katelyn Maley scored three times for the ‘hawks and Briann Maley and Hannah Sims each had two of the TOR hits.

In the consolation round, TOR again took an early lead with a score in the top of the first, but LaConner came back with three in the bottom of the inning on the way to the 4-3 elimination win.

The Braves led 4-1 after three frames.

Sophomore pitcher Briann Maley held the Braves to seven hits.

Rosalia senior Katelyn Maley finished out her sports career with a 4-4 hitting mark against the Braves. She scored three times.

LaConner Coach Peg Seeling called out Sammie Miller to relieve starter Abi Hedlund in the sixth inning.
