Mary Carpenter

Rosary for Mary Angela Carpenter, 85, native of Colton who resided in the Princeton, Idaho, area for 42 years, was recited Saturday, July 17, at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Moscow and the funeral service followed at 1:30. Burial was at Freeze Cemetery in Potlatch, Idaho.

She died last Monday, July 12, 2010, after a 16-month battle with cancer.

Born on the family farm at Colton, Oct. 15, 1924, to Henry Jr. and Agnes Broemling Zellerhoff, she attended Guardian Angel Grade School in Colton. Following the death of their mother, she ceased going to high school and stayed home to help raise her siblings.

She met Bob Carpenter at a dance and they were married May 5, 1947, at Coeur d’Alene. They lived in Lewiston until 1953 when they moved to the Thorn Creek area at Uniontown and lived there until 1956. They moved to her family’s farm at Colton and raised a family for the next 12 years. In 1968 they moved to Hatter Creek at Princeton, Idaho, and resided there since.

A stay-at-home mom, she took particular delight in cooking and felt it her duty to feed the hungry. She was known for her home-made bread. Mary also enjoyed hunting for treasures, particularly dolls, at yard sales. She loved to travel and made trips to Mexico and Alaska.

Surviving are her husband, Bob; children Julie (Mel) Whitworth, Gold Bar; Trish (Bob) Munnoch, Lake Tapps; Mike (Gale) Carpenter, Princeton; John (Ruthie) Carpenter, Harvard, Idaho; Diane (Dale) Amberson, Snohomish; Ray (Ellen) Carpenter; Tim (Fran) Carpenter; Tom (Val) Carpenter; Marilyn (Lonie) Austin, all of Princeton; Bill (Julie) Carpenter of Salt Lake City, Utah; Linda (Jimmy) Louie, Spokane; Laura (Darren) Johnson, Seattle, siblings Jeanne, Patricia, Joe, Vonnie, Nettie, Rita and James, 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren.

William Hallett

A celebration of life for William Harry (Bill) Hallett, 83, Arizona City, Ariz., will be Aug. 14, at 3 p.m. at the home of his sister-in law, Lisa Hedlund, in Folsom, Calif. Mr. Hallett, who was raised in Colfax, died July 10, 2010, at Chandler Regional Medical Center in Chandler, Ariz.

Born Oct. 27, 1926, in Pateros, to Rose L. and Harry B. Hallett, he graduated from Colfax High School where he played basketball and football. He served in the Navy during World War II, and then went on to play basketball for Eastern Washington State College.

He received a bachelor of arts in education from Eastern and later a master of education from Central Washington State College. He taught and coached basketball at LaCrosse High School where he led the Tigers to a fourth-place finish at the state B in 1958 and a seventh in 1960.

He moved to California in 1963 and had a very successful career in teaching, coaching and school administration at Sacramento.

After retirement, he tended to his property in Placerville, Calif., and took care of his family. He and his wife Karen of 36 years moved to Arizona City in 2005. He played his last basketball game at age 53.

Survivors include his wife Karen, at the home in Arizona City; two sons, Eric Hallett and Edwin Boone Hallett; three daughters, Vicki Woodhead, Stacy Cano and Keely Morales; two brothers, Robert Hallett and Jack Hallett, two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Betsy Garcia; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial athletic scholarship has been set up in his honor for LaCrosse High School graduates. Donations can be sent to LaCrosse Dollars for Scholars, Box 258, LaCrosse, 99143.

John T. Lewis

A graveside service for John T. Lewis, 69, former long-time Colfax resident, will be at the Bethel Cemetery in Steptoe today, Thursday, July 22, at 10 a.m. A celebration of his life will follow at the Colfax Eagles, one of his favorite places.

Mr. Lewis died last Thursday, July 15, 2010, in Spokane. He had made his home in Spokane for approximately 10 years.

Born March 30, 1941, in Colfax to Robert Lee and Wanda Mae Lewis, he was raised in Steptoe and attended Steptoe Grade School and Colfax High School. He served in the U.S. Army and returned to Colfax where he was employed for many years as a detailer for Brown & Holter Chevrolet. He also worked for Davis Aerial applicators.

Mr. Lewis was a volunteer fireman and enjoyed gardening. He was a long-time member of the Eagles in Colfax and enjoyed watching Cougar football and socializing with friends.

Surviving are four children, Jackie (Toby) Ruhs, Spokane; Jean (Robin) Stanard, Colfax; Jim Lewis, Spokane; and Jody (Doug) Vo, Richland; one brother, Robert Lewis, Garfield; three sisters, Penny Gilchrist, Colfax; Patty Franklin, Iola, Kansas, and Linda Marlow, Redding, Calif; two half-sisters, Gracie Wilmourth, Springdale; and Lea Bronson, Spokane; and a half-brother, Sidney Coltron, Seattle and 10 grandchildren.

Jack P. McGreal

Jack P. McGreal, 71, a former resident of Potlatch, died July 6, 2010, at the Kalispell Medical Center in Kalispell, Mont. A memorial service will be Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Potlatch Cemetery at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Kathy Kramer officiating. He will be cremated.

Born on July 6, 1939, at Potlatch, to Phillip and Beulah Piper McGreal, he attended Potlatch schools and graduated with the class of 1958.

He was employed with Potlatch Forests Inc. at the Potlatch mill at Potlatch and as a carrier driver and forklift operator. He married Sharon Schultz, and they were later divorced.

He moved to Alaska in 1977 and worked in the forest industry there for a few years before moving to Eureka, Mont., in about 1981 where he worked for the forest industry until 1999 when health reasons forced him to retire.

Survivors include four sons, Kurt McGreal, St. Maries; Kent McGreal, Harvard, Idaho; Kelly McGreal, Potlatch; Keith McGreal, Fernwood, Idaho .; one daughter, Kathy (Tom) Westacott, Garfield; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be given to the Potlatch Ambulance Fund, Box 63, Potlatch.
