Colfax 12-under leaguers advance to Pullman finals

Parker Huber gets the tag down on Orofino's Kolby Brink after shortstop Carter Dahmen made the toss to second base.

Colfax 12-under Little Leaguers will finish their three-week tournament run with a trip to Orofino to play in the Trevor Haag Memorial this weekend. They are booked to start the action at 8 a.m. Friday against a team from Missoula.

The team will make the trip after posting a 3-2 overall mark in the Pullman Summer Classic. They booked a 3-1 on the first two days to advance to the Pullman finals on Sunday.

The two teams who topped Colfax, Trail and Colville Valley, wound up in the championship game with Trail posting a 4-3 win for the tournament title.

Colville dropped Colfax 23-7 in the first round of the finals Sunday. Colfax actually moved to a 4-3 lead after two innings, but Colville charged for nine runs in the top of the third.

Colfax started the prelim round Friday morning with an 11-1 win over the Whitman Tigers, a team made up mostly of Pullman and Colton players. Colfax used five pitchers in the first game to ration out the talent for the long run. Tourney rules limited pitchers to nine innings, Coach Wayne Gregory said.

Keith Gfeller hit three doubles against the Tigers with two of them ground rule shots after they bounced over the fence. Danny Robinson rapped an in-the-park homer for two RBIs, and Cal Gregory also doubled for two RBIs.

In their second game, Colfax defeated Orofino 3-0 with Robinson, Gfeller and Carter Dahmen combining to throw a no-hitter at the Idaho club.

Parker Huber and Cal Gregory scored two runs in the second inning off bases-loaded walks to Dylan Heiser and Logan Gingerich. Gfeller scored in the third off a fielder’s choice.

Saturday morning Trail, the eventual champions, and Colfax battled for three extra innings before Trail booked a 5-4 win.

Colfax put it into a 4-4 tie in the last chance sixth innings when Dylan Heiser and Gfeller singled. They scored when Dahmen looped a long fly out to centerfield, and the Trail defense was slow in getting the ball back to the infield.

Trail took the win in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off single.

Colfax came back with 12-2 win over the North Idaho Grasshoppers. They had just three hits, but three errors by the ‘hopper defense and eight walks from the ‘hopper mound had a lot to do with the stack of runs by the locals, Gregory said.
