Pomeroy defends title for fourth straight win

Girls in the 14-under class hit the water in the 50 freestyle event early in the Saturday meet.

Pomeroy’s pool crew turned in another strong performance at Colfax Saturday to win the coveted Cluckey Cup, the trophy for the Knight’s of Columbus Jerry Cluckey Memorial Swim meet, for the fourth straight time. The Pomeroy team rolled up 431.5 points to dominate the six other teams at the meet and take the trophy for the fourth straight year.

Colfax swimmers stacked up 350 points to place second this year and collected trophies for three of the four top swimmer awards.

Scout Cai, who broke a record in the 50-yard freestyle event, and Jack Ross each scored 40 points for Colfax to take the senior class individual point trophies. Both competed in the 12-under events.

Senior boys churn up the water at the start of the backstroke race. Brendan Ren, Pomeroy, closest to camera, took the win in the event with a 33.24.

In the junior division, Drew Curtis-Brewer of St. John/Endicott cranked out 24 points to win the girls trophy, and Mark Jacobs of Colfax and Simon Brannan of Pullman tied for the boys trophy. Each booked 21 team points. The awards were presented by Fred Brannan of Colfax, Simon Brannan’s grandfather. Simon is also a great-grandson of the late Jerry Cluckey who developed the race series.

This year’s meet was the 45th edition of the big meet.

Other team totals were Dayton 283, St. John/Endicott 143, Garfield/Palouse 133.5, Pullman 102 and Oakesdale 34.

Pomeroy Coach Shelley Slaybaugh said Pomeroy this year had 58 swimmers turn out for the team and 36 of them made it to Saturday’s big meet. Pomeroy picked up a lot of team points in the older age brackets. Slaybaugh said many of the older kids on their team get in their pool practice sessions after work.

Don Eldred and Don Fairburn, the two former club coaches from Port Angeles who retired to Pomeroy, continue to play a big part of the program.

“They are a huge part of our success,” Slaybaugh said.

Stacy Monahan has also helped coach the Pomeroy team this year.

Coach Slaybaugh also credited the Knights and all the officials who take time to host the big meet. She believes the summer’s competition offers a lot to the overall development of Pomeroy swimmers and all youngsters who participate in the league.

Scout Cai of Colfax churned out a 28.88 in the freestyle to finish 2.16 ahead of Ireland Mayfield in the 50-yard freestyle. That time cut .41 off the record set by Tiffany Pittman of Colfax in 1993.

Cai won five of the six individual events in the senior division. Mayfield took the butterfly by six-tenths to derail the Colfax swimmer’s bid for a sweep.

Ross also won five of the six events in 12-under. He was also stopped short of a sweep in the butterfly where Brigham Campbell of Colfax clocked 37.55 for a strong win.

Dayton’s 14-under medley relay team booked the other record performance at the meet. They clocked a 2:20 to bump the 2:23.13 mark, also set by a Dayton team, in 1995. Team members were Marshall Nichodom, Ryan Proctor, Brandon Goodell and Austin Kimmons.

Pomeroy’s team also finished under the 1995 record mark with a 2:21.25.

Pomeroy swimmers whoop it up after taking the Knights of Columbus Cluckey trophy for the fourth straight year in the novice league's finale at the Colfax pool.
