Landscapes at Dahmen

Whitebird, Idaho, artist Gloria Dawson Teats will exhibit more than 35 new oil paintings at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown during September. The exhibit features impressionistic landscape oil paintings of the Palouse and prairies of Idaho and Washington. Gloria will be at the Barn Sunday, Sept. 5, the day of the fourth annual harvest festiva,l to share information with visitors. The official opening reception will be Saturday, Sept. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. with Gloria in attendance and refreshments.

Born and raised in central Idaho, Gloria is known for her landscapes. The exhibit will include new paintings of the Salmon River, Seven Devils and Gospel Hump areas. Her paintings are known for their clear color and expressive brush work.

Gloria studied art at Walla Walla Community College in Clarkston and has studied in workshops. She has taught oil painting for more than 20 years and still conducts landscape painting workshops.

All library branches close

All 14 branches of Whitman County Library will be closed close Sept. 4-6 for the Labor Day holiday. Due dates for library materials have been extended in anticipation of the closure and no late fines will be charged for these two days.

PCT audition dates

Auditions for Pullman Civic Theatre’s next production, Inspecting Carol, will be Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. and Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. at the Nye Street Theatre in Pullman. Callbacks will be Sunday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m.

The play is about an acting company’s awkward attempt at producing “A Christmas Carol.” Performance dates will be Dec. 10-12 and 16-19.

Hospital Auxiliary

Whitman Hospital Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 1:30 p.m., in the hospital annex building. The regular meeting day has been changed because of Labor Day holiday. New officers will preside. All are welcome to attend.

A boy, Charlie Earl Chase II, was born Aug. 30, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Sara and Donavon Chase. Maternal grandparents are Sue Foster, Spokane Valley, and Sanford Foster, Rosalia. Paternal grandparents are Cal and Cathy Chase, Tekoa. Weighing eight pounds, six ounces at birth, the baby joins two sisters, Denali, 3, and McKinley, 19 months.

Vanek son born

A boy was born Aug. 27, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Amy and Todd Vanek. Maternal grandparents are Ingrid Pack, Boise and Paul Pack, Ammon, Idaho. Paternal grandparents are Phyllis McDaniel, Cripple Creek, Colo., and Raymond Vanek, Kingsville, Ohio. Weighing nine pounds, nine ounces at birth, the baby joins siblings, Tayma, 9, Dyamin, 7, and Liana, 3.

Ward daughter born

A girl, Kaitlynn Grae, was born at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Kristina and William Ward. Maternal grandparents are Roger and Janet Young, Colfax. Paternal grandparents are Ray and Paulette Collins, Palm Beach, Fla., and Sonny and Sharon Ward, Texas. Weighing seven pounds, 13 ounces at birth, the baby joins siblings, Kelly, Darien, Derek and Jacob.

Daniel daughter born

A girl, Gabriella Virginia, was born Aug. 24, 2010, at Deaconess Women’s and Children Center in Spokane, to Jeremy and Shayla Daniel of Greenacres. Maternal grandmother is Tammy Gayton, Lubbock, Texas. Paternal grandparents are Roger and Loretta Daniel, LaCrosse. Great-grandmother is Willene Daniel, Coto de Caza, Calif. Weighing seven pounds, 12 ounces at birth, she is the couple’s first child.

Goyke daughter born

A girl, Evelyn Virginia, was born Aug. 24, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Amanda and Paul Goyke. Maternal grandparents are Robert and Lota Ross, Woodland. Paternal grandparents are Michael and Sandra Goyke, Rosalia. Weighing seven pounds, two ounces at birth, the baby joins brothers, Austin and Jacob.

McCulloh daughter born

A girl, Gretchen Elise, was born Aug. 23, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Melissa and Ray McCulloh. Maternal grandparents are Merry and Rich Weed, Bothell. Paternal grandparents are Yvonne McCulloh, Colfax and David McCulloh, Paw Paw, W.V. Weighing 10 pounds, four ounces at birth, the baby joins two sisters, Charlotte and Amelia.

A girl, Beth Ann, was born Aug. 23, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Bridgett and Justin Morgan. Maternal grandparents are Bill and Lori Knox, Colfax. Paternal grandparents are Alan and Cathy Morgan, Colfax. Weighing seven pounds, 14 ounces at birth, the baby joins two brothers, Mark and Matt, and one sister, Ashley.

Kile granddaughter born

A girl, Ellie Lynn, was born Aug. 18, 2010, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, to Randall and Cheryl Kono of Ephrata. Maternal grandparents are Randy and Beverly Kile, Pine City. Paternal grandparents are Robert and Kay Kono, Tracyton, Wash. Great-grandparents are Helen Jordan, Cheney and Blanche Kile, Spokane Valley. Weighing eight pounds, seven ounces at birth, the baby joins brothers, Tyler, 3, and Spencer, 20 months.

On Campus

ART

A Fine Arts Faculty Focus Exhibition featuring works by Ross Coates will be Aug. 26 to Sept. 25 at the WSU Museum of Art.

Coates was chair of the fine arts department, teaching from 1976-1987 and serving as interim museum director 2001-02. His art reflects the notion of life as a journey, finding bits and pieces, creating collages, constructions and paintings that mirror his fascination.

EXHIBITS

“Nature Twice,” a special exhibit of poetry about animals and nature, in the Conner Museum of Natural History will be Sept. 9-Nov. 21 on the WSU campus.

The exhibit is free and open to the public 8 to-5 p.m. daily in Abelson Hall on the ground floor. An opening poetry reading and reception will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 in Abelson Hall, room 201

“Nature Twice” explores diverse perspectives of animals and natural history through the work of several well-known poets. The poems provide personal views of animals and the relationships between people and the natural world.

Poets Linda Russo, WSU assistant professor of English, and Ray Hanby, a WSU graduate, will read from their recent work.

Support children’s educational programs countywide by shopping in Troll’s Corner bookstore in the Colfax Branch of Whitman County Library. The store carries a nice variety of books, movies and music with prices starting at just 10 cents.

With the return of fall, comes library card sign up month. Anyone registering for a library card during the month of September will be placed in a grand prize drawing for $25 gift certificates to a local business of their choice. Sponsored by the Friends of Whitman County Library.

Among scheduled events is a local appearance by renowned quilter Margaret Miller on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Colfax Library and also, the library hits the road Sept. 9-12 for the Palouse Empire Fair. Kids visiting the library’s booth will spin the Wheel of Prizes while adults enjoy a news selection of images from the library’s Rural Heritage collection.

Whitman County Library will close Sept. 4-6 for the Labor Day holiday. No items will be due during this closure but the online products and booksdrops will remain available for customer convenience.
