The Nighthawks rolled out a 43-27 win in front of a packed sideline on the Rosalia ballfield.
On the game’s first play, the ‘hawks intercepted a pass by Eagle quarterback David Coreas and ran it back to the Soap Lake 12 yard line. After a pair of run blasts into the line, QB Scott Eberle crossed the goal line from three yards out for the game’s first score.
Soap Lake fumbled after the ensuing kickoff, and Eberle again took advantage, finding Lance Lindgren for a 16-yard scoring toss on the next play.
TOR then went to the ground game. Solid work by the offensive line cleared the way for a Nighthawk ground game that racked up 467 total yards on 74 rushing plays.
“I have to give a lot of credit to our O-line,” said Coach Ken Lindgren. “They did a great job in opening holes all over the place.”
The rushing yards were compiled by a number of backs with the TOR reserves activated after Eberle capped first quarter scoring with a 32-yard scamper.
The ‘hawks benefited from scoring plunges by starter Earl Gaines and reserves David Littleton and Craig Nelson
“Everybody we gave the ball did a pretty good job with it, ” Lindgren said. He put in his young players to keep the game from getting completely out of hand against a small Eagle team.
“They’re struggling a bit. They’re trying to get something going over there,” said Lindgren. “That can take awhile.”
TOR gets a bye this week before jumping back into league play on the road against DeSales.
“You know what you’re going to get with DeSales,” said Lindgren. “They reload every year.”
The Irish are 2-1 with their record blemish coming off a 38-19 loss to Colfax earlier this month. Last year, DeSales beat TOR 35-14.
Lindgren said his squad has got to play a near perfect game to stop the powerhouse Irish attack.
“We’ve got to be able to pass the ball well, and we have got to eliminate the penalties,” he said.
