Clothing give-away begins at Garfield
LaDow Grange at Garfield will sponsor a clothing give-away Oct. 14-17, and a free winter coat and heavy clothing give-away Oct. 21-24, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the American Legion/Grange Hall in Garfield. Clothing for all ages and sizes will be offered.
This is the fifth year for the Grange-sponsored event.
Donations of clean, gently used clothing will be accepted. Volunteers are needed to assist. Contact LaJeanne Proctor or Carol Wilson in Garfield.

Lehn daughter bornA girl, Quincy Raquel, was born Oct. 8, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Nikki and Rodger Lehn. Maternal grandparents are Jim and Debbie Porter, Farmington. Paternal grandmother is Dolores Lehn, Tekoa. Weighing seven pounds, 11 ounces at birth, the baby joins siblings, Kamryn, Skyleigh, Delani and Libby.
Helmer son bornA boy, Linkin Phoenix, was born Oct. 7, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Victoria and Michael Helmer. Maternal grandparents are Gail and Michael Matthews, Fairbanks, Alaska. Paternal grandparents are Tammy and John Helmer, Loveland, Colo. Weighing seven pounds, 12 ounces at birth, the baby joins siblings Landin, Jeddiah and John.
Kightlinger son bornA boy, Zakaree John, was born Oct. 4, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Nikkita and Jason Kightlinger. Maternal grandparents are Dawn and Bruce Polley, Malden, and Patsy and Ray Brooks, Rosalia. Paternal grandparents are Jay and Gina Kightlinger and LeAnn Rainey, Oregon. Weighing seven pounds, three ounces at birth, the baby joins sibling Spencer.
Phillips son bornA boy, Hagen Hunter, was born Oct. 1, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to April and Brandon Phillips. Maternal grandparents are Wayne and Pam Bergey, Colfax. Paternal grandparents are Jim and Pat Britton, Colfax. Weighting eight pounds, three ounces at birth, the baby joins one sister, Miranda.
Caudle girl bornA daughter, Victoria Grace, was born Sept. 21, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Arcelia and Jade Caudle. Weighing six pounds, one ounce, the baby joins one sister, Michelle and one brother, Damon.

ART
WSU will present a world-class exhibition, “Contemporary Australian Aboriginal Art: From the Collection of Margaret Levi and Robert Kaplan,” Oct. 1 – Dec. 11.
The Levi-Kaplan Collection was built over many years of extensive travel and study. The collectors have sought out the best work by Aboriginal artists to reveal the diversity, creativity and aesthetic power of one of the most exciting art movements in the world today.
Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 to 4 p.m. (open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays).
“As the Camera Sees It,” photography by Iole Alessandrini and Ed Mannery, Sept. 17-Oct. 22, University of Idaho’s Prichard Gallery in downtown Moscow. The duo has been collaborating for over 10 years to produce original work using lasers and custom topics to create thin films of light that become visible by the interaction of objects and people. Gallery hours, 10 to 8 Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 6 Sundays.
DRAMA
Stage One, the one act play festival, will present three plays at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 14-16 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 and 17 in Wadleigh Theatre inside Daggy Hall in the Washington State University campus.
The show will present “Stories from Nanjing,” “Final Erase” and “Seven Snakes.”
Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for WSU students and senior citizens, and $5 for youth.
EXHIBITS
“Nature Twice,” a special exhibit of poetry about animals and nature, will be in WSU’s Conner Museum of Natural History Sept. 9-Nov. 21 on the WSU campus. Free and open to the public 8 to 5 p.m. daily in Abelson.

The Colfax Library will host a voter forum on Tuesday, Oct. 19, in the basement meeting room. Approximately half of the statewide initiatives will be discussed and the opposing candidates are expected to attend. The meeting room is now accessible via elevator for those with physical limitations.
A community blood drive is set for Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m. Donors can call the library to schedule an appointment but walk-ins are also welcome.
Third Thursday Club resumes Oct. 21 at 3:30 for kids in grades 1-4 with crafts, games, stories and a snack. Students can ride the bus directly to the library with a note from their parent or guardian.
Whitman County Library has received multiple copies of the book The Heart of Horses in preparation for a visit from the author Molly Gloss. Requests for a copy can be made at any library branch. Gloss will appear on Friday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m. in Colfax and at noon in St. John as part of Everybody Reads.
Programs for preschoolers continue each Thursday in the Colfax Library. Baby time programs are at 10:10, Toddler Time at 10:30 and Preschool Time at 11:00. Play and Learn takes place each Friday from 10-11:30 for all preschoolers and those who care for them.
Families are invited to a Pumpkin Decorating party Oct. 27, from 3:30-4:30. Participants can bring their own decorating supplies or use the ones provided by the library.
