4H hall of fame inducts Jerry Newman of Palouse

Jerry Newman of Palouse was one of four Washington residents inducted into the Washington State 4H Hall of Fame at the 2010 4H Forum in Spokane Oct. 15, They were selected for their leadership, commitment and impact on 4H and their communities.

Newman joined WSU Extension 4H as a youth development specialist in 1979. Newman provided leadership in many project areas including equine, beef, sheep, swine and animal quality assurance. He was also responsible for designing statewide and national curriculum and was instrumental in 4H contests including horse bowl, hippology, horse judging and forestry stewardship.

Lawana Harting and Donna Hanger of Dayton were also honored. Hanger started her first 4H club in 1971. She and co-leader Harting are also project leaders for food preservation, health, and swine. They coordinate the Columbia County 4H Dress Review, Foods for All Occasions and baking contests.

Bruce Bradley of Port Orchard, Kitsap County, was also inducted. He has served as a rabbit club leader, State 4H fair rabbit superintendent and served on the state 4H fair board.

More than 160 people have been inducted into the State 4H Hall of Fame since its inception in 2001.

Budding Rose Art Gallery

Budding Rose Art Gallery Fall Festival Art Show will be Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Rosalia. The festival will feature Spokane sculptor, Harold Balazs; ceramic artwork from Montana’s Archie Bray Foundation, and works of Peter Max, Linda Lekinff, Itzchak Tarkay and more.

Clubs & Youth Groups

Rosalia Garden Club

Members will welcome guests to their upcoming Special Guest Day, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. in the Rosalia United Methodist Church.

Guest Speaker will be Karen Goldberg, owner of "The Plant Wizard" in Spokane. Karen specializes in orchids along with other indoor plants. Before coming to Spokane, Karen lived in California where she cared for indoor plants for many celebrities. She will bring several different species of orchids and offer them for sale.

Willa Mae Hardesty and Mary Ann Bowman are the hosts along with other garden club members.

Club members are completing their gardening season, caring for the Rosalia Mini Park. Several memorials were added recently. All memorials have been listed in a ledger which will be kept at the Rosalia Library.

Athenaeum Club

Nineteen members attended the semi-annual business meeting at the home of Mae Claypool Friday, Oct. 15. Members responded with updates on the various committees.

Maxine Lange was elected as second vice-president and Mary Ann Wigen moved up to first vice-president.

Athenaeum Club is the oldest continuous women’s club in the state, first organized in 1895, and has historically significant scrapbooks, minutes, etc. A committee of Christine Kackman, Ruth Enos and Pat Zuger were asked to look into the permanent preservation of these valuable items and report next month.

Cherry Alice Van Tine has offered to give her silver tea service to the club. The yearbook committee of which she is a member will discuss it.

Named to the yearbook committee for 2011-2012 were Lynne Bruya, chairman, Sharon Baum, Christine Kackman, Lois Scholz, Kay Van Dyck and Mary Ann Wigen.

Mary Ann Wigen presented a humorous and informative talk on the aster flower.

Hostess Mae Claypool served a delicious assortment of cookies with fruit, nuts and coffee or tea.

Next meeting will be Nov. 5 at the home of Lynne Bruya.

Moser girl born

A daughter, Lyla Marie, was born Oct. 6, 2010 to Kirk and Diana Moser of Troy, Idaho. Paternal grandparents are Ron and Marietta Moser of Colton. Maternal grandparents are Richard Harvey of Steptoe and Mary Beth Harvey of Colfax. Great-grandparents include Dorothy Harvey of Steptoe, Bernadine Grieser of Pullman, and Mel Moser of Conkling Park. The baby joins a brother, Wade, 3.

On Campus

ART

WSU will present a world-class exhibition, "Contemporary Australian Aboriginal Art: From the Collection of Margaret Levi and Robert Kaplan," Oct. 1 – Dec. 11.

The Levi-Kaplan Collection was built over many years of extensive travel and study. The collectors have sought out the best work by Aboriginal artists to reveal the diversity, creativity and aesthetic power of one of the most exciting art movements in the world today.

Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 to 4 p.m. (open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays).

"As the Camera Sees It," photography by Iole Alessandrini and Ed Mannery, Sept. 17-Oct. 22, University of Idaho’s Prichard Gallery in downtown Moscow. The duo has been collaborating for over 10 years to produce original work using lasers and custom topics to create thin films of light that become visible by the interaction of objects and people. Gallery hours, 10 to 8 Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 6 Sundays.

MUSIC

The new WSU faculty Nighthawk quartet will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, in Kimbrough Concert Hall. Members of the Nighthawk are saxophonists Greg Yasinitsky and Dave Hagelganz, bassist, Frederick (Dave) Snider, and percussionist David Jarvis. The program will include the original Yasinitsky, compositions "Smoke," "Missing You" and "Nighthawk" The group will also perform Snider’s arrangement of Charles Mingus’s "So Long Eric" and "Deep Space" written by Hagelganz.

Tickets will be $10 general admission and $5 for 60 and older non-WSU students. WSU students with ID are admitted free. All proceeds benefit the WSU School of Music scholarship fund.

The annual Educational Choral Festival sponsored by the WSU School of Music will be Saturday, Oct. 23. High school choirs will perform for clinicians between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Kimbrough Concert Hall. Ten choirs from six high schools will participate.

WSU ensembles performing during the day will be Opera Workshop, directed by Julie Anne Wieck, at 2 p.m. in Kimbrough Concert Hall, VoJazz, directed by Dean Luethi at 3:40 p.m. in Kimbrough, and Madrigal/Chamber Singers and Concert Choir at 5 p.m. in Bryan Hall Theatre.

This event is free and open to the public.

EXHIBITS

"Nature Twice," a special exhibit of poetry about animals and nature, will be in WSU’s Conner Museum of Natural History Sept. 9-Nov. 21 on the WSU campus. Free and open to the public 8 to 5 p.m. daily in Abelson.

Families are invited to a pumpkin decorating party Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 3:30-4:30. Participants can bring their own decorating supplies or use the ones provided by the library.

After-school programs resume for children in grades 1-4 with Third Thursday Club Oct. 21 from 3:30-4:30 in the Colfax Library. Jennings Elementary students can ride the bus directly with a note from their parent or guardian.

Programs for preschoolers continue each Thursday. Baby time programs are at 10:10, Toddler Time at 10:30 and Preschool Time at 11:00. Play and Learn takes place each Friday from 10-11:30 for all preschoolers and those who care for them.
