With a barrage of sharp shooting, Colfax boys pegged a 58-51 road win at Freeman Friday night to open their hoop season. The Bulldogs zapped nine three-pointers for the night with junior Kyle Johnson hitting five of them.
Many of the zappers came in the first quarter when the Bulldogs stacked a 15-4 lead over the Scotties.
Brandon Gfeller and JJ Robinson, who finished with a game high 20 points, each added two three-point shots.
“We just shot very well at the start, and got a big jump on them,” Coach Reece Jenkin said.
He also noted Andy Scholz came out with a strong third quarter to keep the momentum cooking after the half. Scholz finished with 10 points.
Robinson also hit eight of nine toss shots going down the chute in the last quarter to shut off the Scotties’ attempts to get more control of the ball.
The Bulldogs booked the non-league opener without their recruits off the football team. Alex Teade, Justin Berarducci and Kellen Morgan are expected to join the ranks Friday night when Colfax opens the home season against the visiting Lakeside Eagles.
Lakeside Friday moved their record to 3-1 with a 60-51 non-league win over St. Georges. Ryan Gunderson led the Eagles with 27 points and 14 boards against the Dragons.
“It should be a pretty good ball game,” Coach Jenkin predicted.
Saturday Colfax will open Bi-County League play at Davenport. The Gorillas Saturday advanced their record to 3-0 with a 56-51 win over Liberty. Colfax defenders will have to stifle Josh Likkel who hit 28 against the Lancers and pulled down 15 boards.
Other scores in the league round included Reardan 71-Lind/Ritzville/Sprague 63 and Springdale 50-Kettle Falls 40.
