Eagles hoop verdicts go down at the buzzer

Cardiac systems of St. John/Endicott fans got a workout this week, as the boys hoop squad posted a trifecta of last-second finishes.

Sophomore swing man Kaleb Simon had the shot of the week Friday night, as his baseline flip fell through the net as the buzzer sounded to give the Eagles a 63-62 zap win over visiting Tekoa/Oakesdale.

The last-second score gave Simon 20 points for the game, to tie with Cole McCanna for the team high. Nighthawk Joseph Tampien put down 23 points for the game high.

The SJE zinger came after the Nighthawks pegged a six-point edge midway through the last quarter. SiCha Tallman hit two under the bucket and added one on the outside.

The Eagles battled back for a 61-61 tie on a shot by Cole McCanna underneath in the last nine seconds. An Eagle foul sent Cody Shulz to the line and he hit one for a 62-61 lead, but the Eagles broke it down the court, and Simon put up the baseline shot off a lean just before the buzzer.

The dramatic finish script went the other way for SJE Saturday on the road at Touchet, as Joey Weber grabbed an offensive rebound and plunked it through the rim at the horn to give the Indians a 34-32 win.

Tuesday, the Eagles had to hang on for dear life to post a 49-46 home win against a game Odessa/Harrington squad. The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead and had just enough juice to hold off the Titans. Simon again led with 13. Mason Van Lith added 12.

LaCROSSE/WASHTUCNA got their own fourth quarter heroics Tuesday night from sophomore Austin Summers in a 69-49 win over visiting Garfield/Palouse.

Summers knocked down four straight from behind the arc in the final frame, as the Tigercats exploded in the fourth quarter 28-13 tear to put the game away. The T-cat win avenged a loss on the Vikings court in a non-league opener.

Summers finished with a game high 16 points and Jeff Zimmer added 15 for LW. Blake Slocum and J.B. Lange each had 13 to top GP.

The Tigercats took a fourth quarter on the chin Saturday night as a late Colton charge gave the Wildcats a 61-57 win. Colton was led by its inside-out combo of Josh Straughan, who had 23 points and 13 assists, and Dustin Patchen who notched 18 points and 14 boards.

LW was paced by freshman guard Darcy Stamper, who booked 15 points.

Rosalia got back injured star forward Nathan Richards this week and cruised through a triad of home games.

Richards took the protective brace off his broken hand before Friday’s game, and went off for 21 points in a 61-29 win over Touchet. With their big man back the Spartans jumped out to a 18-5 first quarter and dominated the glass, taking 33 rebounds to the Indians’ 17. Eight other Spartans found the scorebook.

Saturday’s game ended quicker; the Sparts logged a 23-2 first quarter on the way to a 67-28 win over Pomeroy. Richards again led the way with 19 points and Flash Hodges added 14. Justin Ruark’s eight points topped the Pirates.

Richards logged 17 points Tuesday night as Rosalia capped its 3-0 week with a 53-39 win over Lind/Ritzville. D.J. Brown added 15 points.

COLTON booked a home win Friday night against Pomeroy with Dustin Patchen’s 20 leading the way. Straughan added 16 for the ‘cats. Ruark again led Pomeroy with 13 points.

The Wildcats dropped a non-leaguer at Asotin 64-41 Tuesday night. Straughan and Patchen combined for 23 of Colton’s 41 points.

TEKOA/OAKESDALE topped Garfield/Palouse 55-50 in a league win at Tekoa Saturday night. Max Mueller and Tallman had 11 points apiece for the Nighthawks, who climbed out of a seven-point first quarter hole to take the win. Blake Slocum and J.B. Lange had 14 each.

GARFIELD/PALOUSE lost a non-league home game 53-49 to neighbor Potlatch Friday night.
