County will charge for road name changes

Whitman County will now charge residents who ask to have the name of their county road changed. Commissioners Monday approved a new policy that allows the county Public Works department to charge costs associated with changing the name of a road to those who request the change.

Public Works Director Mark Storey said the issue came up earlier this month when the county changed the name of Mail Route Road in the northwest area of the county to Cayuse Lake Road.

Storey estimated the cost of time and materials to make new signs, update the emergency dispatch database and update maps at $500.
