Colfax girls get on track

After struggling in their first two games against non-league foes, Colfax girls got on track Saturday night at Davenport when they opened the league campaign with a 50-32 win over the Gorillas.

They followed that Monday with a 45-42 escape at Kettle Falls to post a 2-0 in league play before the holiday break.

After the Christmas break, the Bulldogs will travel to the SunDome at Yakima where they are booked to face Zillah at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday, Dec. 29, and LaSalle in a rematch of last year’s 2B title game at 9 p.m. the next night, Dec. 30.

Coach Corey Baerlocher credited his Bulldogs with cranking up the intensity for the two league games. A key in holding off Kettle in the second half was containing Samantha Carlton who rambled through the Colfax press in the first half. Carlton, who finished with eight points, also showed a lot of skill in finding a shooter once she moved the ball in range.

Overall, the Kettle caper earned a “ratty” rating from Baerlocher; Colfax had 28 turnovers at Kettle and the hosts had 27.

At Davenport Saturday, Colfax had a 32-21 lead at the half and kept up the intensity on the way to the 50-32 win in the league opener. Junior guard Amelie Bruya led Colfax with 18, including four three-point buckets.

Baerlocher noted Miranda Mielke lived up to her advance booking with 21 points for the Gorillas.

Friday at home against the Lakeside Eagles, Colfax trailed the A division guests most of the way. Senior Lexie Zappone was another player who lived up to her advance billing.

Zappone, who has been running the Eagles offense since she was a freshman, had little trouble going upcourt against the Bulldog press. She also tuned up her shooting game, with five three-pointers and finished with a game high 19 points.
