Wes Weddell band set for Dahmen barn

Often referred to as a modern “Woodie Guthrie,” Pullman native Wes Weddell will bring his full band along for a concert at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Jan. 29 to celebrate the release of his fourth CD, “By the Side of the Lake.”

Following a 65-day tour through all corners of the state to gather local stories and lore, he received the inaugural Mary Gates Venture Fellowship and that led to the “My Northwest Home” CD. It includes an homage to an octogenarian Whitman County carp.

He keeps busy as an in-demand teacher and sideman on a variety of instruments, including regular work with the beloved folk singing duo Reilly & Maloney since 2003. That same year he founded Puget Sound Productions, a federal non-profit organization dedicated to creating live-music spaces around the region and supporting local musicians.

The Wes Weddell band will perform at the Dahmen Barn Saturday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be $10 at the door.

ON CAMPUS

ART

WSU Museum of Art will showcase the talents of Seattle artist Claudia Fitch in an upcoming exhibition from Jan. 13 to April 2. “Claudia Fitch: Works 1987-2010” will feature sculptures created by the artist to play with images from popular culture, including vernacular architecture and decorative statuary. Fitch works intuitively from what she calls a “junk pile” of visual materials culled over the years.

Museum of Art Curator Keith Wells said Fitch’s work has been called decorative, humorous and at times surreal.

The opening reception for the exhibition will be held in the museum gallery at 6 p.m. Jan. 20, followed at 7 p.m. by a lecture by Fitch in the Fine Arts auditorium. The exhibition and related events are free and open to the public.

Fitch has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Washington and a master’s of fine arts degree from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Her work is included in numerous collections, including those of the Seattle Art Museum, Microsoft and the NW Museum of Arts and Culture. Among her many commissions is “The Colossal Heads” series at Qwest Field in Seattle.
