Rosalia rolls over 2A Cards to take tourney title

Rosalia brought in the big boys for its 10th annual Holiday Classic and proved size really doesn’t matter on the hardwood. The classic brought in 2B foes Asotin and Liberty and Medical Lake from the 2A ranks.

In Friday’s champion final, the 1B Spartans rolled over Medical Lake 50-39 to claim the classic title.

The Spartan offense put the game in the bag early and their oppressive defense never let the Cardinals close the gap.

Guard Flash Hodges pushed the Rosalia attack, finishing with a game high 17 points. Post Nathan Richards added 11. Gunner Casey Brown came off the bench to nail three long bombs and put up nine points.

Kevin Fisher led Medical Lake with 10.

Damian Loucks puts one up between Medical Lake's Ismael Teshome (15) and Christian Blasingame in Friday's title battle. Adam Paulson is at right for the Cardinals and Tom Carrothers is in front for the Spartans.

Rosalia matched up against Asotin and their inside monster Ben Servatius in the opening round which was moved back from Wednesday to Thursday. The Spartans disposed of the Panthers 60-46 to advance to the final.

Richards out-muscled Servatius in the post battle, outscoring the Panther 24 to 11.

Wing Jared Hereford added 11 points and Scott Eberle put up 10. Nate Dalton led Asotin with 14.

Medical Lake earned its way into the final with a 57-51 opening round nail-biter over Liberty. The two teams struggled against each other all game, ratcheting up the scoring at the end with a combined 43 points. Fisher booked 19 points, Devon Prince put up 13 and Adam Paulson had 10 to top Medical Lake. Liberty was led by the 12 points of Eric Hammond.

Liberty followed up Thursday against Asotin with a hot fourth quarter in which the Lancers turned a six-point deficit into an eight-point win, 57-49. Jordan Green had 16 points to top the Lancers, Terry Veile added 13 and Dylan Salsbury chipped in 10. Servatius had a game high 24 points for the Panthers.

LaCrosse/Washtucna traveled south to play in the Dayton Christmas Tournament last week, and came home with a forfeit win and a loss.

The Tigercats fell to the hosts 53-43 in Wednesday’s opener before claiming a 1-0 forfeit win over the Kennewick jayvee squad Thursday.

Three other county schools resumed play this week after the holiday break.

Colton booked the lone win for Whitman County league schools with a 66-56 revenge win over visiting Grangeville Tuesday. Wildcat Center Dustin Patchen was all over the court, collecting 20 rebounds to go along with his 20 points, and point guard Josh Straughan added 15 points and 11 dimes. The ‘cats opened the season with a Pearl Harbor Day loss at Grangeville.

Garfield/Palouse lost to Potlatch for the second time in a month Tuesday night, falling 56-53 on the Loggers’ home court. Stephen Brent had 20 points for Potlatch. Blake Slocum topped the Vikings with 17. Freshman Race Martin put up 12 points and 14 rebounds for GP.

St. John/Endicott traveled to Wellpinit Tuesday and fell 75-48. The game was originally scheduled for early December, but snow prevented the Eagles from booking enough pre-season practices to make that date.

Wellpinit hopped out to a quick lead and ended the half up 10 points. The Eagles put up a bit of a rally in the third quarter, but Wellpinit iced the game with a 23-12 fourth quarter. Kyle Raynor’s 12 points were tops for the Eagles.

The Eagles fell 63-48 Thursday night at Davenport, coming out flat and trailing 39-19 at the half. SJE came out gunning in the third quarter, closing the gap to three points, but the Gorillas pushed down the gas pedal in the final frame. Kaleb Simon’s nine points topped eight Eagle scorers.
