Opinion - Living off government . . . literally

President Obama gave his state of the union address on Tuesday.

The Republican Party presented the traditional opposing party rebuttal the same night. Then, a second rebuttal was given by Representative Michelle Bachmann. She spoke for the “Tea Party.”

The rebuttals reinforced the differences between Democrats, Republicans and the Tea Party faction. How the three will operate together is a question still to be answered.

The Tea Party has its own agenda, its own leaders and caucus and its own base.

Its rebuttal to a state of the union address was unique. The movement also promises a unique approach to its legislative duties.

Some Tea Party representatives have taken an equally unique approach to their living arrangements in Washington, D.C.

They are living out of their offices, using Capitol Building facilities, instead of renting homes or apartments.

Basically, they are camping out in the hallowed halls. Some say it shows how seriously they are taking their new jobs—always on duty, always ready to save government from itself, not willing to be distracted from their purpose.

Yet, for all the talk about dedication and cutting government, these Capitol campers are basically living off the government. They are taking their salaries as elected officials and sticking it in their pockets while getting their living facilities free from the government.

It is a minor thing, but it is blatantly inconsistent with their philosophy. A few extra flushes of the toilets, a few showers and the electricity to heat up a hot plate will not ruin the federal budget. Still, what they are preaching is far removed from what these campers are practicing.

No reports of the campers offering to reimburse the taxpayers for their free lodging and amenities have surfaced.

This free use of government facilities must mean that programs to help the homeless and indigent will not be on the Tea Party’s chopping block.
