Wildcat, Pomeroy girls await first round winners

Four teams in the SE league started the playoff part of the season Wednesday at St. John and Rosalia with the winners advancing to a semi-final round Friday.

Colton, the league dominator which finished their league run at 14-0, will host the winner of Wednesday’s Tekoa/Oakesdale/Rosalia game.

Pomeroy, which landed in the number-two berth after a draw, will host the winner of Wednesday’s SJE vs. Garfield/Palouse game.

Friday’s semi winners get a guarantee for the next level of playoffs. They will collide next Saturday at the Colfax gym in the SE title game.

Top six teams in the SE are competing to for three slots in the state grid which will start with regional play Feb. 25.

The top SE team and the number-three SE team will land at Walla Walla High for the regional round Feb. 25. Number two will land at Eastmont.

Aim for all entrants over the next three weeks is one of the eight slots in three days of the all-B show which will crank up at Spokane March 3.

Pomeroy girls dealt the last card in the league race Saturday night when they pegged a 48-37 revenge win over the SJE Eagles at the Pirates’ court. HayLee Koller broke out for 20 points and eight rebounds to put the Pirates out front.

Alli Winters hit eight to lead the Eagles who lost ground after posting a 12-12 tie in the first quarter.

Pomeroy bagged the number-two slot for this week’s tourney start by virtue of a draw. SJE took the number-three slot and hosted Garfield/ Palouse Wednesday. That winner travels to Pomeroy Friday.

Pomeroy dropped Touchet 36-28 in last Friday’s round.

Touchet Saturday traveled to Oakesdale in need of a win to stay in the playoff picture. They pegged a two-point lead at the half, but the Nighthawks battled back for a 42-38 win.

That ended the season for the Indians.
