Open house set for county elections office March 3

Whitman County Auditor Eunice Coker Tuesday afternoon released an invitation to the public to an open house ceremony for the county’s new elections office on Main Street Colfax.

The open house will be Thursday, March 3, at 1:30 p.m., with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Coker said Washington State Secretary of State Sam Reed will be a featured guest at the ceremony.

Remodeling of the building the county purchased from Harrison Electric at Main and Upton Streets was funded with a combination of a $360,000 grant from the federal Help America Vote Act and county funds. Crews from James Elmer Construction, Spokane, began the project last July and completed it last month.

Coker said crews will not be ready to move in furniture and equipment until after the current election is finalized.

Remodeling costs were $443,000. A $105,571 roof was put on the building in 2009.
