Beaver looking for a home

This beaver, apparently stranded in the flood control channel opposite Jennings Elementary School, has become the focus of attention for residents in the North Flat.

The beaver has been located on the highway side of the channel downstream from the Sixth Street Bridge.

Residents believe the beaver was washed downstream from the segment of the North Palouse above the flood channel where some beaver families reside.

The beaver has apparently been unsuccessful in attempts to swim back up the spillway at the head of the channel.

Food has been dropped over the channel to sustain the beaver who apparently spends most of the daylight hours sleeping against the channel wall.

Colfax police have received reports of another sighting of a beaver along the Palouse River below the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Palouse River behind the Les Schwab store.

They were hoping that beaver was the one stranded upstream, but that apparently is not the case.

According to Chief Bill Hickman, there is a fine for feeding wildlife in town up to $1,500.
