Volunteers sought for library arts classes

Whitman County Library seeks to offer regular arts programs free of charge to the community. To accomplish this goal, the library is seeking individuals interested in occasional volunteer opportunities. Classes might be one-time events or ongoing series’ with subjects like drawing, painting, decorating, flower arranging, drama, poetry, writing, music, movement, scrap-booking, origami, seasonal or holiday crafts, wheat weaving, knitting, collage art, hobbies and more.

Contact Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick at Whitman County Library Colfax branch to volunteer or obtain more information.

Age group of the audience, size of the class, costs for materials and other details can be discussed during the call.

Offer Excel class

A free one-hour introductory class for Excel 2010 computer software will be Saturday, Feb. 26, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Colfax Library. Instructor Angela Garza will cover the basics for navigating in this powerful program as well as some tips and tricks for creating and managing worksheets. This class will be beneficial for beginners and those who are looking to learn to navigate in the newest version of Excel.

Clubs & Youth Groups

Rosalia Garden Club

Rosalia Garden Club will meet Wednesday, March 9, at the Rosalia Community Baptist Church. Dessert will be served at 3 p.m. by hostesses Terry Tucker and Leila VanDyke. Members are asked to please note the date and time change for this meeting.

Guest Speaker will be Carol Newcomb, owner of Northland Rosarium, a nursery located north of Spangle, which specializes in own-root hardy roses and companion plants. She also has a Display Garden and conducts gardening classes Saturdays at her nursery. Carol’s program topic is “Roses on Parade.” She will feature the newest and favorites in her presentation.

Garden Club members are reminded to bring their club growing project “Avocados” for the final reports.

Children’s butterfly posters are due to the club on this date. They will be judged and the winners will be sent to the state contest. For further information, contact club president Kathy Hilliard.

Athenaeum Club

Athenaeum Club met last Friday at the Whitman County Library. The program was presented by Leona Herman on the Snowdrop which is a late winter early spring flower. Refreshments were furnished by Janice McKay and Pat Zuger.

Next meeting is March 4 at the home of Kay Van Dyke.

Births

Lyons daughter born

A girl, Alayana Grace, was born Feb. 14, 2011, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Sarah Lyons and Tyler Norwood. Maternal grandparents are Thomas Lyons, Spokane, and Chris and Sherry McKeen, St. John. Paternal grandparents are Geoff and Robyn Norwood, Spokane. Weighing eight pounds at birth, the baby joins one sibling, Lexi, 3.

ART

WSU Museum of Art showcases the talents of Seattle artist Claudia Fitch in an exhibition from Jan. 13 to April 2, “Claudia Fitch: Works 1987-2010” will feature sculptures created by the artist to play with images from popular culture, including vernacular architecture and decorative statuary. Fitch works intuitively from what she calls a “junk pile” of visual materials culled over the years.

Fitch has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Washington and a master’s of fine arts degree from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.

UI Prichard Art Gallery exhibit: “John Wood, On the Edge of Clear Meaning” Feb. 21-April 9. A visual studies workshop traveling exhibition.

MUSIC

The WSU School of Music will present a Choral Concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in Bryan Hall featuring performances by the Madrigal /Chamber Singers, University Singers and Concert Choir.

Opening the program, the Madrigal/Chamber Singers, under the direction of Lori Wiest, will perform two contrasting selections by Renaissance English composer, John Wilbye.

The University Singers, under the direction of Professor Dean Luethi, will present an All-American program including the African American spiritual “Hush! Somebody’s Callin’ My Name” and “Gentle Annie,” arranged by Dennis Eliot.

Concert Choir, conducted by Wiest, will perform a culturally diverse program featuring two selections by Tania Leen, the composer-in-residence for the Festival of Contemporary Art Music earlier in February. Two Cuban songs, “Drume Negrita” and “El Manisero” are arrangements of popular Cuban folk tunes and are reminiscent of street music.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The WSU School of Music Faculty Artist Series will present the Palouse Trio at 8 p.m., March 4, in Bryan Hall Theatre. They will feature two of the most-loved trios in their repertoire, Brahms’ B major trio, Op.8.

Tickets will be available in the lobby one hour before concert time. All proceeds from the sales of tickets will benefit the School of Music scholarship fund. General admission is $10, seniors and non-WSU student tickets cost $5, and WSU students with ID can attend the concert for free.

Meet the Artist celebrates the Colfax Banner artists at the community reception Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in the Colfax Branch Library. Come share in the fun as all banner artists are introduced, their banner work is shared and the People’s Choice for the favorite banner is announced. For more information, contact Debi Anderson of the Colfax Arts Council.

A Teddy Bear party will be at the Colfax Library today, Thursday, Feb. 24. Colfax Storytime programs for babies begin at 10:10 a.m. with a Toddler Time at 10:30 a.m. followed by Preschool Time at 11 a.m. Everyone is invited.

Play and Learn classes are each Friday from 10 to 11:30.
