Colfax girls need two wins after Reardan prevails again

Colfax and Reardan girls mixed it up Saturday in the game for the district title at Mt. Spokane. The chiefs again prevailed, this time with a 47-44 win, after the Bulldogs came from behind to take the lead late in the game. The win puts Reardan at 3-0 for the series and sends them to this week’s regional rounds at Wenatchee High. They can bag a ticket to the state eight at Spokane with just one more win.

Colfax girls will go to University High Friday afternoon. They will need to win twice to make the state show in Spokane.

First foe for the girls will be Lake Roosevelt at 4 p.m., the number-three team out of the big District 5/6 playoffs last week at Wenatchee High. The other game on the girls card will be Waitsburg/Prescott, the SE champs, and White Swan, the 5/6 second place team. Loser of that matchup will play the winner of the first game.

Colfax Coach Cory Baerlocher credited the Bulldog girls with again battling Reardan Saturday at Mt. Spokane. The Bulldogs again had a slow start and trailed by five points at the half. They put the district battle on boil with about two minutes off the clock in the fourth quarter when Amelie Bruya hit two three-point shots, and Brooke Weber added a third trey to break a 41-39 Colfax lead with 2:27 left.

The game tied at 41-41, and again at 43-43, before Reardan’s Lauren Schulz dropped a bucket off a baseline reverse to regain the lead for the chiefs.

The clock went down to a foul shot mode with 26 seconds left and Reardan added two more points.

Baerlocher said Reardan’s 43-24 edge in rebounds was a key factor for the Indians. They had 21 offensive rebounds which made for repeat chances under the bucket.

Reardan out-shot Colfax 17-13 from the field, but they failed to collect a three-point shot for the whole game. That stat shows the Indians had multiple chances to pound it back up from under rim and took advantage.

Reardan’s Kelsey Moos, who was on the sick list in the middle part of the season, topped the scoring with 13. Moos picked up seven of her points off the toss line after she was hit by the Colfax defensive pressure.

“We really played great defense on the floor,” Baerlocher said.

Bruya finished with 11 to top Colfax. She hit both of her three-pointers to lead the Colfax charge in the fourth. Webber, who hit the go-ahead trey, finished with nine, and Hannah Harazin, who ignited the Colfax charge with two treys in the top of the fourth, finished with 10.

Baerlocher noted Elizabeth Hatley, the Bulldogs’ 5-6 junior guard, topped the rebound charts with six.

He credited freshman Taylor Larsen with coming off the bench and bagging four points and two boards to help keep the Bulldogs within range when they were struggling in the first half.

Reardan, now 21-2 overall, will travel to Wenatchee Friday and battle Brewster, the top team in the big tourney last week at Wenatchee. Both number-ones get double elim status in the weekend’s round.

Colfax Friday goes up against a Lake Roosevelt team which bounced Enitiat 65-40 in the last game at the double district show in Wentachee. Dominique Pleasants hit 25 of the Raiders’ points.

Waitsburg/Prescott tops the four-team billing at University with its title win for District 9. Asotin topped DeSales for the number-two SE slot and will face Northwest Christian, third place finisher Saturday for District 7, at Wenatchee in the first round game.
