Golfers tee off new league season

Whitman County high school golfers swung into a new season this week, with duffers from St. John, Endicott, Tekoa, Oakesdale and Rosalia hitting the links at two matches.

St. John/Endicott’s Michal Schuster claimed the medal in girls action Tuesday in a league match with Asotin, Pomeroy and Tekoa/Oakesdale/Rosalia.

Schuster shot 43 on the nine-hole par 36 Asotin links.

The Eagle girls team totaled 182 and finished behind Asotin’s 156 as the only squads to post team scores.

Eagle Erin Bailey put up a 64 and Felicity Mapes 59. For the Nighthawks Nicole Zimmerman posted a 55 and Lisa Harper a 70.

The TOR boys booked third with a 289 team score and the St. John/Endicott boys fourth with a 300 at Asotin. Asotin claimed the top spot with a 221, with Panther Jon Eaton claiming the medal at 37, one over par.

For the Nighthawks, Casey Brown was the top swinger with a 40, followed by Grant Gelhaus at 59, Zach Zimmerman 62, Alex Sullivan 63 and Corey Brown 65.

John Quinton’s 54 topped the Eagles, followed by Hunter Fairbanks 54, Dustin Patrick 55, Will Knott 59 an R.J. Baltierra 65.

Thursday, the Eagles traveled to the Tri-Cities in the league opening jamboree on the nine-hole par 3 GolfLand with Dayton, DeSales, Tri-Cities Prep and Liberty Christian.

Erin Schuster claimed the medal for the girls with a 35 on the par 27 course. Erin Bailey shot 44 and Felicity Mapes, making her SJE golf debut, shot 59.

William Knott’s 39 topped the SJE boys, but the medal went to Ryan Baumgart of DeSales who shot a 28. Alex McCue added a 53 and R.J. Baltierra 65.
