Wildcats, Vikings log games among the rains

Colton’s Josh Straughan threw a five-inning shutout on the way to a 10-0 shutout of neighbors from Genesee last Thursday at Colton. Straughan fanned seven of the Bulldogs, and Colton defenders scooped up seven more infield grounders.

Straughan stopped the Genesee lineup with 72 pitches over the five innings.

Matt Becker, Justin Meyer and Jake Straughan each had two of the eight Colton hits. Becker doubled for the lone extra-base hit.

Garfield/Palouse baseball players split with Pomeroy on the Pirate’s field Friday. The Vikings took a 10-5 win in the opener with Blake Slocum throwing an eight hitter.

Slocum, JB Lange and Jesse Lopez each had two of the Vikings’ eight hits. Wilson Allen homered. Each side had three errors in the first game.

Pomeroy bounced back for a 4-1 win in the second game with Justin Ruark throwing a one-hitter. Lopez allowed just three hits in taking the loss.

Colton girls moved their record to 1-1 last Wednesday with a 7-9 loss to Prairie at Airport Park in Lewiston. Prairie took the win with a four-run charge in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Mikayla Nygreen fanned seven Prairie batters in taking the loss. Jenna Moser led Colton hits with a double and single. Erin Weber and Hannah Kramer each had two hits and Megan Heitstuman had a double.

Garfield/Palouse girls sustained a 0-9 loss to Asotin in their season opener at Asotin last Thursday. The Panthers stacked eight hits in taking the shutout.

Erin Witthuhn, who pitched the opener, had two of the Viking’s three hits with a double.
