Hog Heaven at Dahmen

Hog Heaven Big Band will play swing era tunes Saturday, April 23, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown. Admission will be $8 for a couple, $5 for a single with children under 12 free. Complimentary dance lessons begin at 6 p.m.

Red Cross training set today at CHS

A Red Cross presentations on how to help humanitarian efforts around the world will be presented today, Thursday, April 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Colfax High School Gym. The presentation will include a video and lecture on humanitarian law.

The session is intended to teach educators and others about how they can specifically help people in a humanitarian crisis. Refreshments will be provided.

Legion commended

National American Legion Commander Jimmie Foster has sent a certificate of appreciation to the Colfax Legion Post for reaching 100 percent of their membership goal. The goal, which is set by the state Legion Department, was 80 members.

Births

Lynch daughter born

A girl, Avianna Renee, was born April 4, 2011, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Allison Lynch. Maternal grandparents are David and Lorena Lynch, Oakesdale. Avianna weighed seven pounds, six ounces at birth.

MUSIC

The WSU School of Music faculty artist series will present the Solstice Wind Quintet in concert at 8 p.m. Friday, April 15, in Kimbrough Concert Hall. The quintet includes Ann Marie Yasinitsky, flute; Keri McCarthy, oboe; Shannon Scott, clarinet; Ryan Hare, bassoon; and Bob Dickow, horn. Dickow is a member of the faculty at the University of Idaho. This concert will feature James Schoepflin, WSU professor emeritus, on bass clarinet.

General admission will be $10; senior citizens and WSU students admitted free. Proceeds benefit music scholarships at WSU.

DRAMA

The WSU Department of Theatre and Dance will present “The Shape of Things” in Jones Theatre at 7:30 p.m. April 14-16. The show explores the painful questions of life. After a chance meeting in a museum, Evelyn, a sexy, aggressive artist, and Adam, a shy, insecure student, become embroiled in an intense affair.

“The Laramie Project” will be in Wadleigh Theatre at 7:30 p.m. April 14-16. In October 1998, a 21-year-old University of Wyoming student was kidnapped, severely beaten, and left to die, tied to a fence in the middle of a prairie outside Laramie, Wyo. His body was not discovered until the next day and he died several days later in an area hospital. The student, Matthew Shepard, was the victim of this assault because he was gay.

ART

WSU Museum of Art will feature the talents of graduate candidates in the Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, April 8 to May 7. The exhibition is organized by museum curator Keith Wells.

Join us for a History of Fish and Fishing in the Columbia Basin with author Dennis Dauble on Saturday, April 16, at 2 p.m. in the Colfax Library. This free program is co-sponsored by Humanities Washington and the Friends of the Whitman County Library and is open to the public.

Whitman County Library is challenging youngsters for TV Turn Off Week, April 18-24. Friends of the Library will award every child who goes five days without TV during the challenge a free book.

Youngsters in grades 1-4 are invited to an “Egg-Stravaganza” next Thursday, April 21 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Colfax Library. Kids may ride bus #5 with a note from parent to enjoy stories, crafts, games and more.

All branches of Whitman County Library will close Sunday, April 24, for Easter.

The library has received multiple copies of “Blue Heaven” by C.J Box in preparation for Everybody Reads. Visit any branch library to pick up a copy or to make a request.
