Anthenaeum

Anthenaeum Club will have its final meeting for the year on Friday, May 6, 2011 as a lunch at Banyan’s on the Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman. The lunch will begin at 12:00 p.m. Meet at 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot at Colfax First Baptist to carpool.

ART

WSU Museum of Art will feature the talents of graduate candidates in the Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, April 8 to May 7. The exhibition is organized by museum curator Keith Wells.

The University of Idaho’s Prichard Art Gallery on Main Street in Moscow will present the thesis exhibition by master of fine arts students until May 14. Work of six students will be on display.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

DeFord baby

Ryan Kolman DeFord, born April 27, 2011, at eight pounds, eight ounces to Dustin R. DeFord and Crystal Chamber-DeFord. Maternal grandparents are Tam and Mic Chambers. Paternal grandparents are Steve and Rayanna DeFord. The baby joins brother, Matthew.

Fisher baby

Fisher, Aubree Lynn, born on April 27, 2011, at seven pounds, seven ounces and 21 inches, to Breanna Gill and Dave Fisher. Maternal grandparents are James and Deanna Gill. Paternal grandparents are Nadine and Clint Rice.

Artisan, Empire will team for spring fling at Tekoa

The Empire Theatre will team with Cafe Artisan for the first annual Spring Fling Friday, May 13 in Tekoa.

The music, wine and food event will start at 6 p.m. in the Cafe Artisan with a selection of hors d’oeuvres, tapas and wines, then moves across Crosby Street to the Empire at 7:30 p.m. for the concert by The HRC Trio with Dave Hagelganz on tenor sax, Troy Robey on bass and Joe Covill on drums.

During intermission, Cafe Artisan will offer desserts in the Empire’s lobby.

Hagelganz now teaches jazz studies and sax at Washington State University. He’s been sideman at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival for the last three years and performed with Jimmy Heath, Terell Stafford, Corey Christiansen and Eli Yamin. Robey was chosen outstanding bass soloist at the festival in 2007 and 2008 while a non-traditional student at WSU.

Covill is currently the director of bands for Lincoln Middle school in Pullman, and an accomplished composer/ arranger for both middle and high school bands, specializing in music for younger jazz ensembles. A former music faculty member at Whitman College, Covill has played with jazz greats Lionel Hampton, Nancy King, Frank Foster, Bill Watrous and Pete Christlieb.

In the second set, HRC will be joined by WSU senior vocalist Patricia Wichman and Oakesdale HS students Jacey Headly, flute; Jeffrey DeGon, trumpet; and saxophonist Michael Conklin. Oakesdale’s music teacher Carol Wichman will be on piano.

Advance tickets are recommended for food and show and are $17. Prices for the concert only are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

PCT auditions

Pullman Civic Theatre announces auditions for the production of Rumpelstiltskin will be May 10 and May 11, at 6:30 p.m. Callbacks are Saturday, May 14. Copies of the script will be available for viewing at The Daily Grind in downtown Pullman, Neill Public Library and Moscow Pubic Library. Many parts are available for ages 5 to 60. First rehearsal will be Saturday, May 21.

Performances are July 15-17 and July 21-24.

Burrito dinner at Palouse

Garfield/Palouse High School’s FCCLA chapter plans a burrito dinner fundraiser May 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the high school gym at Palouse. The dinner will help raise funds to send Madi Woltering, Adrian Green and Anthony Floyd to the FCCLA National STAR Events in Anaheim, Calif., July 8-14. Cost will be $10 for ages nine and over, and $5 for children eight and under. There also will be entertainment and a silent auction. Tickets can be purchased at the school.

Prairie Flyer at Dahmen

Prairie Flyer, one of the Pacific Northwest’s premiere bluegrass bands, will play at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown May 21, at 7:30 p.m. The band celebrates its 14th anniversary this year. All members are veterans of the bluegrass scene. Admissions will be $10 at the door.

Stueckle to give talk at Celebrate Life Expo

Carol Stueckle of Colfax will be one of the speakers at the Celebrate Life Expo May 14 at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center. She will be one of nine speakers for the expo which will also feature more than 130 exhibitors.

Stueckle, who spent her childhood days on a farm in the Endicott area, is a former Colfax mayor and Whitman Hospital Foundation coordinator. She will talk on “Humor In Life—A new View at 72.” Her talk is scheduled at 11:30 a.m.

Galileoscope program

Stephanie McNelis, education coordinator for the Palouse Discovery Science Center at Pullman will visit the Colfax Library to present an interactive Galileoscope program next Monday, May 9 at 7 p. m. The Galileoscope is a high-quality, low-cost telescope kit developed by a team of leading astronomers, optical engineers, and science educator for the International Year of Astronomy in 2009.

Womack fete today

A farewell party for former Whitman Hospital CEO David Womack will be today, May 5, at 2:30 at the hospital’s lower level. Womack is resigning as CEO to take a job as executive director with a hospital chain in Bakersfield, CA. Womack and his wife Julie moved to Colfax 18 months ago when he was hired as administrator at the hospital.

BOOKMARK

All 14 branches of Whitman County Library will close next Wednesday, May 11 for an all-staff training day. Due dates for library materials have been extended in anticipation of the closure and no late fines will be charged

Library board of trustees will meet May 17 at 4 p.m.

Third Thursday will be May 19 from 3:30- 4:30 p.m.

“Seasons of the Drylands” with photographer John Clement will be Saturday, May 21 at 2 p.m.

All 14 Whitman County Library branches will be closed Wednesday, May 11, for the annual all staff meeting. Due dates have been extended and the library’s website will still be available at http://www.whitco.lib.wa.us.
