‘Fur & Feathers’ opens at Dahmen

A “Fur and Feathers” exhibit opened May 7 at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown and will continues through May 29. Judy Fairley, Clarkston, and Julie Thompson, Spanaway, are co-exhibitors.

Thompson paints Northwest wildlife paintings on feathers. Fairley’s intricate scratchboard art captures the detail right down to the hair of the wildlife she paints. Scratchboard is a clay surface coated with India ink. Using a sharp, angled blade or scratch tool, an outline is made on the surface of the scratchboard. Shadows and highlights are created by “scratching” away at the board. Various techniques such as hatching and stippling are used to texture and detail the image further.

Fairley has been a resident artist at Artisans at the Dahmen barn since it opened in 2006. Thompson began painting in 1990 on wing feathers that her mother’s peacocks shed.
