Colfax softball players bagged two big wins Monday at Springdale and faced two more games at Liberty Wednesday to finish out the Bi-County run. They also expect to host Waitsburg-Prescott on a non-leaguer Friday.
Coach Terry Eng said Colfax remains in the hunt for a number-two finish in the league race with the final shakeout of the league expected late this week.
Kettle Falls now has the top slot with Colfax, Lind/Ritzville and Northwest Christian in the hunt for the two and three slots.
The district next Tuesday will stage two elimination games among the bottom four teams and then arrive Saturday, May 21, at Merkel Field, north of Albi Stadium in Spokane, with six teams. On the line will be four slots in the big state playoff at Yakima the following week.
A number-two finish in the league rates a pass for the first round at Merkel and guarantees a semi-final slot in the district event. One win from that launch point will earn a state ticket.
Colfax Monday headed for Mary Walker at Springdale after McDonald Park again was deluged by rain. Eng noted the sky cleared and the team actually encountered summer like weather as they approached Springdale.
Colfax booked a 10-0 shutout in the first game with pitcher Amy Hickman allowing the Chargers one hit. She struck out nine Chargers.
Colfax had 13 hits with Christa Nyholm and Sam Pearson each tagging two singles and a triple.
Colfax took it over the 10-run limit in the bottom of the fifth when they scored six runs. Hickman had the big hit for the charge, a two-run double. She also hit a triple in the game.
Other hits for Colfax were booked by Lauren Moore, triple; Booke Webber, Rachel Robinson, two singles; and Taylor Larsen.
The 16-0 shutout in the second game included 11 walks from the Chargers and 6 errors.
Hickman allowed two hits, fanned eight and walked one. Colfax led 12-0 after two frames. Nyholm rapped two doubles, and Sam Pearson doubled, Moore, Hickman and Robinson had the other hits.
