Olson grandson will graduate at Annapolis
Olaf Douglas Olson, grandson of Ray Olson and the late Jerrie Olson of Colfax, will receive his commission May 27 from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. A 2007 graduate of Bainbridge High School, he is the son of Douglas and Melanie Olson of Bainbridge Island.
A two-time state diving champion in the state AA, Olson competed on the diving team at the academy. He has been selected to join the Navy’s Special Warfare Community and will report to Coronado at San Diego in October.
Earns doctorate
Lindsay Anderson of Pullman graduated from Creighton University with a doctorate degree in physical therapy with honors during the commencement ceremony Saturday, May 14, at the Qwest Center Omaha.

The summer reading theme is “One World, Many Stories.” Stop by the library to sign up and visit the library’s website for a complete schedule of events for each of the 14 branches.
Friends of Whitman County Library will meet Tuesday, June 7, at 11 a.m. in the Colfax Library. This meeting is open to the public and refreshments are served.
Gardening books:
“The Complete Guide to Companion Planting” by Dale Mayer, explains how to effectively pair your crops in a way that ensures there are no incompatibilities and that you get the most out of every seed.
“Gardening Month by Month” by Ian Spence provides a step-by-step plan.
FFA will post 230 vets’ flags
Colfax FFA and VFW will post 230 veterans memorial flags at the Colfax Cemetery this week. The flags are among honors extended to U.S. veterans at the time of their funeral and have been presented to the VFW by their families
Eleven flags have been donated to the collection in the past year.
Thursday evening, FFA members will put in all the flag holders with the name tags of the respective veterans. Friday, members will post the flags in the holders.
At 10 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day, Colfax FFA members will conduct the annual “Remembrance Program” at the Colfax Cemetery. This is the seventh year the Colfax FFA and the VFW have worked together on this project. All are encouraged attend the program and view the flags.
Morgan earns all-As
Heidi Morgan of Colfax was named to the spring President’s List at LeTourneau University, an interdenominational Christian university based in Longview, Texas. Morgan achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
First summer date slated at library
Whitman County Library’s Summer Reading program’s first entertainment will be Friday, June 17, at 6 p.m. with the Matt Baker Comedy Stunt Show. The following five weekly scheduled events will be each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Magician Jeff Evans takes the stage June 23 and “Bubbillusionist” Jarom Watts June 30. Music performances and a program for dog lovers wraps the entire six-week series
Teens and adults can participate by reading and reviewing three books over the summer. Prizes for completion include coffee drinks, pizza slices and other treats from local businesses.
Youth who read (or are read to) 10 books or 10 hours during the summer qualify for a prize bag of goodies following the last library program.
